I quite often do Cambridge to Aberdeen and back in a weekend, in one of my Volvos, or occasionally a hire van. I can get 38 mpg out of the V40 (2.0, non-turbo), 32 mpg out of the 740, and 28 mpg out of a van. That's not thrashing it, but is cruising at the speed limit all the way.

Aberdeen's a nice place, and a good university. Hope your daughter has a great time in the granite city. What's she reading?
