HOW TO: Seatbelt change for S/V40
Here is my method on how to change a seatbelt in an s40 96-04, This is a common problem due to fraying cause by the trim on the pillar. Volvo charge an awful amount for doing this job as a brand new belt is 175 pounds, I bought mine off ebay for 9.99! I had a limited amount of tools to use as I broke my rachet so anybody with a basic tool kit can do this job, it took me 15-20 minutes but feel free to take your time! I hope this helps and also keeps a few quid in your pockets! so here it is step by step
MAKE SURE IGNITION IS OFF!!! STEP 1 First fold the seat down there is two levers at the rear of the seat at the bottom pull these at the same time and push the top half of the seat forward, this should give you plenty of room. This is what we have originally STEP 2 Start off by removing the panels on the two door sills as shown in the pictures, the rear one is held on by clips just pull this up carefully as in not to break the clips the front sill is held on by two philip head screws and a clip remove the screws and pull loose, STEP 3 next remove the lower panel shown here to remove this you have to pull it upwards. there is to "arms" which clip around the pillar at the top of the panel keep pulling up the panel until these are at the thinnest point of the pillar, thus easier to release the arms, pull the panel towards you now but be gently the arms are brittle it, tis was the fiddliest part of the job to get this panel off, once its of you will be left with this STEP 4 Next remove the orange wire connect here It simply pulls out, I presume it has something to do with the airbags or pretension. STEP 5 The upper panel comes next, I found the easiest way to take this panel of was to pull off the window rubbers either side illustrated here The panels is easy to remove after this by pulling it gently downwards and then outwards, This is what you should see now STEP 6 There is two bolts top and bottom of the seatbelt holdster size 15 or 16 sorry I cant remember! this is what they look like [IMG][/IMG] renove these two and the holdster will come free of the pillar dont forget these washers there important [IMG][/IMG]. Rest the holster on the floor. STEP 6 Now you must remove the belt for its anchoring position on the seat its located behind the panel on the side of the seat [IMG][/IMG] This is a 14 socket once removed from the seat the remove the bolt and washer from the belt the bolt is usually stuck in the platic washer so hold the washer with your hand while turning the bolt with the socket, this should work it free, be careful with the yellow plastic washer as it is s**t! its shown here [IMG][/IMG]. Congratulations your belt is off!!! VERY IMPORTANT dont forget to put the new belt through the slit in the upper panel before putting it on as you wont be able to put it on later the pics shows what i mean [IMG][/IMG] All the best of luck! |

Also as mentioned by another member in a different thread it is a good time to smooth off the cause of the fraying in the first place, emery cloth does the job.
