Volvo 960 Gas conversion - Kent?
I probably want to convert my 960 - I'm in Kent. Where should I go? Should I prefer a Prins system or a Romano one? If I have a toroid tank, where do I put the spare wheel? There are rumours of Andy Rowlands (an Amazon man, maybe still keeper of the Amazon register) converting a 960 and getting it up to 240 in stead of 204 bhp, which would be handy. Is he still about?

Andy has not been around for a long time. Converting to LPG is not going to gain you power.
Systems wise OMVL, Europegas and KME are what I consider the better systems. Prins uses some very good parts but not a good ECU. Never been a fan of romano even after they sorted the major injector and reducer issues. Spare wheel either stick it in the boot or leave it at home - most new cars do not have a spare. You can fit upto a 95ltr water capacity tank in place of teh spare wheel |

Thank you
Thank you that is interesting. The nearest chap to me is a Prins fan (I've been to talk to him) but are the others you mention UKLPG approvable?

Approvable
Only Prins and Romano seem to be UKLPG approvable.

ALL LPG systems are UKLPG approvable provided all components are E marked.

As a bit of an aside Roger, i'd strongly suggest using a towbar mounted filler, it means you don't have to have big holes drilled in the bodywork. Tinleytech sell a nice stainless steel bracket (sorry Dai, i know they're your competition) to mount the filler between towball and bracket - unless you have a swan-neck towball of course!
Gives you a rough idea what they look like.

Yes I far prefer to fit the filler at the back. I have used that bracet on some cars but in mast cases use my own further back and to the side.

I was just thinking - i have more stainless steel on that towing bracket than in the average cutlery set!
LPG Filler bracket, towing electrics socket bracket and the bumper protector. Oh yeah, and the bolts that hold the electric socket. Joking aside, there is a major benefit to having the filler in the centre, it doesn't matter which side of the LPG pump you can get to when you go to fill up. On my Jeep, the filler had been mounted in the end of the bumper on the drivers side. That meant i had to wait until the left hand side of the LPG pump was clear before filling. With my Coupé it doesn't matter, i just drive to the pump and fill. The 760 will be towbar mounted as well, just need the towbar first!

Spare wheel
I guess you have an Estate. many people have the spare wheel laying around loose in the boot area, but I think that is rather dangerous in case of an accident. One of the first accessories I bought was the cargo rack to keep everything in the boot. If you plan on carrying a spare wheel loose in the boot, at least fasten it with a strap.
I have my spare wheel standing upright behind the OS wheel arch. If you take out the floor panel it will even sit a bit deeper than on the attached photo. The wheel itself is secured with a threaded rod and wing nut to the lower window frame. The other picture shows a temporary spare wheel that fits completely behind the wheel arch, which is of course the best solution. Like many others, I have not been able to copy this. It is probably a very uncommonly sized wheel. My LPG filler is on the OS as well, in the black plastic bumper side extension part. It does mean you sometimes have to wait at the filling station, although the hose is usually long enought to pull around the back. I think it is the best location, as it is hardly visible on first sight and you do not need to cut holes in any metal parts. My wife has driven off once with the filling hose still attached. Had the filler been mounted in sheet metal, this would have been a costly repair. Now I could easily push it back in the plastic bumper. |
