2000 V70 2.5tdi d5252t cut out, won't restart
Hi all,
I'm new to the forum but have owned my v70 for 5 years now. I'm putting this thread in the p1 v70 area as mine has the older 2.5tdi engine (I think only a handful of the p2's had this engine?) I was slowing down for some lights probably doing 5-10mph. The lights went green, I put it into second and the engine died as I tried to pull away. It would not restart. Engine turns over fine but doesn't fire. I phoned my girlfriend (at 6 am) to tow me home which she did (very kindly)! In my rage I put it into my local garage for a basic diagnostic but they couldn't find the problem. No fault codes etc. They recommended an auto electrics specialist to delve further into the problem but at unknown cost. Being a diyer I thought I'd have a look myself before spending any more money....... I found the tensioner for the fuel pump belt had worked loose so I've reset the fuel pump timing manually and re-tightened the belt but the car still won't start! There is fuel going to the injectors and my car is not the common rail type so pretty sure injectors haven't got anything to do with this problem. Any ideas? I 'm thinking about changing crankshaft sensor as a trial and error thing but can't for the life of me find the bloomin' thing! Anyone know where it is? It's the D5252T Audi engine but nothing on the internet is helping. There are a few location pics but mine isn't there! Any other ideas what could be the cause if not the sensor? Many thanks for your help in advance Tom. |

Hy,
Welcome on the forum, Tom. I haven't access to my soft at the moment. How many miles has your car ? You've owned this car for five years. Any replacement of the fuel filter ? I'm a newbie, so, I try to help to my level. VV 70

setting the fuel timing
Hi guys, thanks for your help. I'll answer both questions.
I changed fuel filter 2-3 years ago (30-40k miles ago). Timed as follows: Fuel pump belt removed. Engine put in TDC. I did this by aligning the flywheel notch with the gearbox housing notch from under the car. I then aligned the tiny notch out of the fuel pump pulley with the marker on the housing of the pump. I followed the videos from this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ny2LbvmZMjc Once the fuel pump was aligned, I tightened the special bolt by removing the shim to prevent the pump from rotating. I then reinstalled the pump belt and tensioner before releasing the special bolt to allow the pump to spin freely again. I think that's right but still won't start and no sign of being close either. Cheers |

Hy Shezza,
interesting video in fact about which I have a question : at 6.13 the guy unscrews the belt tensionner. Is it possible to "put" something on the reduce the noise mine does ? The timing belt has been changed in 2014, but she cries a bit. Cheers. VV 70

How do you know that you were aligning TDC on the compression stroke on No1 cyl? You could be one revolution out.
I don't think your engine has a tdc sensor.

I'm with the guys above - I think your timing is 180° out.
Even when right, if they're anything more than a couple of degrees out they won't start. You will need Vida to live time it once it's running. Definitely worth changing both belts too if they've not been done for a while.

Agree with above, think you might be 180 degrees out. Also the timing will be miles off if setting using the pump marks, very retarded, it's common practice to crack the the cam pulley bolt and rotate the pulley 1 tooth towards you then retighten. Tension the belt again and you should be fine.

Thanks everyone for all your input. I clearly know less than I thought so appreciate being put in the right direction!
So am I right in thinking I could align the flywheel mark under the car. Disconnect the belt then rotate flywheel another 360 degrees before reconnecting? I'm not sure I totally understand the part about loosening the cam pulley. Any chance you could elaborate pls martin? Cheers all |
