Was prompted to search out and find the photograph we have of KYC 556D taken before we owned it. I always assumed it was taken at the same time as the under bonnet picture that appears on page 74 of Volvo P120 The Amazon Series book by Gunther and Wolf. Book was first published in 1991.

Hi all, Richard Hollingworth here, in New Zealand. It is a real shame to see KYC under the tree, hopefully it will get repaired. We owned the car for many years, and as stated, went to many VOC and VEC rallies. The car was originally owned by Mr Berry, Mary Berry's father, who was the Lord Mayor of Bath. We did write to him, and he confirmed his ownership, as well as stating the Ruddspeed work that he ordered from new. We even had the original log book, an old card type document, which supported this. As my father's health deteriorated, we decided to sell the car, so someone else could enjoy the experience. Wanting to sell to someone who would keep it and look after it, we advertised it through the clubs, and had several good offers. Unfortunately, Martin Bashir came into the picture. He promised to look after, and keep it, and was wanting to do a story about his ownership. We were contacted by a garage in London a couple of weeks later to say they had taken KYC in as a part exchange a couple of days after Bashir bought it and made a large profit out of the deal. To us, it was not about the profit, we wanted the car to go to someone who would appreciate it!! As time went by, I came across another Amazon, which had stood in a garage for many years, so decided to do a Black Modified car (UVH), which is currently still going to shows.
We have had many great years with the Volvo Owners and Enthusiasts clubs, met some great people, and made many friends and memories, and I thank everyone for that.
Hope that this sheds a little more light onto KYC.
All the best,
Richard.

Hi, yes the photo shown was taken at the same time as the ones in the book. This particular photo was taken in a studio in Birmingham, the outdoor photos were taken at a couple of locations, the ones in the book were taken at Ladybower, and ones in the magazine were taken around the peaks at Chesterfield. The studio photos took a long time to do, as the photographer literally painted the floors around the car to get the best light.
Regards,
Richard.

Hi Barry, you probably bought it after Martin Bashir traded it in, we know he traded it into a garage, so possibly was this one? Bashir bought it from my father, after promising to keep and look after it. He literally drove it from Chesterfield to London, and then sold it for a large profit. We would not have sold it to him if we knew he was only going to resell it.
Richard.

This is so sad and the fear of being fooled by promised loyal purchasers is the worst type of experience for the enthusiast.
Our loyalty to the Marque and the time and TLC we give to our Motor Car in the pursuit of enjoyment and preservation of a piece of History is ridiculed by these types of people
A few years ago this sort of behaviour was common place among the Classic Car world, insincere business types denying the real enthusiast the chance to own his dream all in the name of "Greed" and a quick buck.
Strange thing is this particular gentleman claims to be a "Committed Christian".
Yeh right.............that's words beginning with "C" ............for................... Conscience ??!

I wonder how the old car came about getting a Somerset number plate. I wonder if it was originally supplied by Volvo in Taunton on that number plate when Mary Berry's dad bought it, then had his DAB1 plate put on. Or if it went onto a Somerset plate when DAB1 came off.

I presume this isn’t the same Martin Bashir from BBC fame, operating (including gender slighted salaries) under strict codes of BBC honour?

Bath did have its own volvo agent, John Tallis of London to Sydney fame times two, the second time he did not crash and went with his wife as co pilot. We had a local meet up with him at his house about 10 years ago or even more, time flies.
