Stop press...now negotiated a discount of almost a grand, making the car even more desirable to me. You would think diesel Volkswagens are out of fashion?

A good discount George and more to the emergency slush fund should it be required.

Sale fell through yesterday. Finance quoted was not in fact available for 'our credit rating', finance offered was, wait for it, £65 a month more expensive, raising price of car by over 3k!!! Understandably we decided not to proceed!!

Sorry to hear that, once you have your heart set on something. However, usually when that happens you end up finding something else you're happier with anyway.

As for me, no ex-rentals.

Most of my experience with rental cars is in the USA, but there seems to be a fad there for doing power drops on rentals (Rev it in neutral, put it into drive). I've had several rentals there with not huge mileages that have had jerky/unresponsive/wrong transmissions (and no, it's not unfamiliarity with autos. Most of my cars have been auto).

As for the UK.... I still wouldn't. The things done to the interiors of these cars may well not be pleasant, and I tend to deep clean any car I buy.

No, you might not mistreat hire cars. However, you have to remember that there's a vast number of knuckle-dragging morons out there who don't care about you, they don't care about the hire car, they don't care about littering, they don't care about anything to do with common decency. These are the people that text and drive, drink and drive, park across two spaces, scrape your car and don't leave a note, etc. These people think that it is a laugh, and that it is their right to mistreat a hire car, doing wheelspins, full bore starts, bouncing it off the rev limiter, power drops, etc.

There was an article a few years ago that did the rounds of the internet where some dudebros rented a 3-speed automatic Dodge Neon, took it to a drag strip, did a few runs, then attached a nitrous injection system, did a few more, blew the airbox off, put it back together and returned it.

Thread ressurection, and nothing to do with rentals but Beetle related. This weekend we arranged to trade in daughter's 35k mile basic Kia Picanto 15 plate for a 15 plate 2.0tdi Beetle with 45k miles, one owner and a fsh. We pick it up on Thurdsay barring disaster, she will feel like a queen of the road driving this after five years in a wee tin box!!

All depends on where the rental company had it.

Used to see thousands of ex-rental cars passing through the auctions at Blackbushe many from the Channel Islands where Max Speed is 40mph & let's face it the Islands not big enough to cover long distances.

Every time I've been to the Channel Islands I've hired cars size wise from a Corsa all the way up to a Minibus (When we used to take Scouts over on summer camp). All the cars were low mileage & in decent nick the hire companies (The Large Ones anyway) shift them on at the end of each season. Last time I went we had a Focus with about 3000 on the clock. That was in September so my guess with the season soon to be ending the car would have been off to auction in a couple of months.

See even then, I would be very concerned about the number of stop start small journeys. Diesels will be a no no as they will be clogged up post Euro 5 however while the petrols may be ok I am not so sure...

I think all this was covered in the thread, I was just resurrecting it as I was considering buying another beetle several years ago, an ex Arnold Clark fleet car, hence the thread, but didn't for the reasons cited, and now, with a pleasing circularity, we have bought my daughter one, a one owner tdi with 45k miles.
