My research indicates that too much gas causes the pressure to get too high for the refrigerant to boil, meaning that cold air can’t actually be produced. But I’m not an aircon expert. Just like my very own post, almost everything you read about car aircon on the interwebs seems to be half informed conjecture.

Yes, generally overcharging will reduce cooling performance & can trigger the high pressure switch, stopping the compressor. Being short of gas generally lowers the temperature of the evaporator, causing partial frosting of the evaporator & the return line to the compressor. However there is usually a low temperature sensor which should stop the compressor before it gets too low in temperature. Again, cooling performance is reduced & if the gas charge is low enough it will trigger the low pressure switch, again stopping the compressor. The aim is to ideally have the evaporator at a couple of degrees above zero for optimum cooling performance.

Default Thank you

Thanks everyone for the replies, i had an AC technician look over it last night and to my dismay there is nothing wrong with the gas. Checked the 2 fuses in the passenger footwell fusebox and the fuses under the bonnet including the relay, he also very kindly plugged in his laptop to check the ecu logs and any relavent data. On the plus side my car passed all categories but the bad side looks like it could be the compressor so a rather expensive fix. Looks like i'll have to make do with no AC for the time being.

The technician though was brilliant and because he couldn't find anything wrong wasn't going to charge me but as he spent and hour on it i thought £20 was money well spent for the thouroughness he went to to try to sort it out for me.
