That happened to a previous S40 1.6D that I've had. The alarm module had to be replaced under warranty.
The issue is a software one where the alarm bell/control unit losses connectivity with the other alarm sensors on the car network. The alarm control unit then thinks it may be trying to be bypassed and sounds the alarm. Under this condition it will never re-connect to the car network and needs replacing and the car needs a software download to prevent the connectivity loss for occurring again. There is a tech-note out on the interweb somewhere about this. I was given a printout of it when I got my unit replaced last year. It was quite a common fault. |

Car has been back to the dealer for a new loom in the front passenger door and a clip on the throttle body as it was sticking, so they say. Not sure if this will solve the problems as I dont use the car that much now as i use the train for work which is more reliable!
Its just a matter of time when it all goes wrong again as they are just replacement parts, not reworked parts. |

Was talking to a service guy a few days back. Asked how reliable my v50 would be because I have read in forums these cars have endless problems especially in software/electrical. Funny how he singled out the 2.0D as the one car in this range that has given lots of issues. The D5 on the other hand is better-ish.
He mentioned stuff like how the car is engineered to get it to pass a euro spec IV or something like that and then he lost me in some technical stuff about injecting additives into diesel,..sensors,.. blah blah blah. perhaps there are just a few more gremlins in the 2.0D than the others. Hope after all the repairs, the car brings some ownership satisfaction to you. cheers |

Just as i thought, the car still suffers from the starting problems. Its time for the car to go. Volvo are useless.
As for the range, ive heard the same thing from a Volvo technician. |

V50 2.0D EGR Problems
Just to add a little to the discussion, I returned our 2006 V50 2.0D to the dealer on Tuesday with some familiar engine problems: poor fuel economy (43.6mpg from a high of 48mpg last year), black smoke under moderate acceleration and a weird problem with the demist fan (would speed up as the engine was pressed hard).
The service manager reported that all of these are attributable to a faulty EGR valve. In his words, this has been an problem with the 2.0D engine and is subject to continuing development by Volvo. The new EGR valve also requires new ECM software. There is also a modified water resevoir to correct a fault whereby the old resevoir would leak into the EGR valve causing it to foul more quickly. I pick the car up tomorrow and we'll see if it is any better. Regards, Dan. |

My problems still persist, now with a car alarm that goes off by its self which Pilling in Milton Keynes cant fix although they have 2 fault codes.
The service manager Cliff Boes is about as much use as a chocolate fire guard with an attitude of, "you prove the fault to us". People like him dont do the brand name any good. Ive now written to the UK director of Ford as a last chance of getting rid of this car without being out of pocket. If this does not work, Im getting the car stickered up and leaving it outside Pilling. Hopefully they will lose sales and maybe its a good chance of a few photo's for the press. |

Re cold start up problems V50 2.0D
Quote:
------- What was the outcome of your start up problem ? I'm having something similar with my V50 2.0D. It will not start until after several attempts. This drains the battery as you can imagine & I had the AA come round to start it up for me just yesterday. The AA chap said the coil light wasn't staying on for too long and reckons that might be the problem. I doubt it as the coil light for me in the past only stays on for a second or two before the engines starts up! |

I have had the same issue. Won't start when cold but it starts fine when the temp is above 10 degrees. The garage has checked the EGR and the accelerator flap, temp sensors in the air inlet and all the looms and there is nothing wrong.
He then checked the control unit by placing it in the fridge - hey presto is wouldn't start. Then he let it warm up and it was fine. So he let the engine cool down and started it next day; same issue. So, he got a hairdryer and warmed up the unit and it started! Thing is that it's only a 06 plate and I don't reckon this component should fail after only 60K?? And at £1K to source and have fitted it's bloody expensive. Any ideas? Would we have recourse with Volvo under the supply of goods act? |

Well, after 3 weeks and over £500 in investigation fees, the Vovlo Garage said the ECU is knackered! Is this normal in a 4 year old car with only 69K on the clock?
I wrote to Volvo highlighting Supply of Goods act and they said they would not be willing to contribute as I had not exclusively used the Volvo service centres! Is this still legal? Under the SoG act purchases should be good for up to six years? The total cost to replace and fitting etc is £1400! Shocking. Just for a bloody electronic box! |

Sell it
I have had exactly the same issues. £2000 later volvo lancaster reading have not got a clue and keep saying it needs further investigation. My boot randomly opens as well on starting the car. lol. its on E bay right now. I have suffered huge financial loss I bought it for £5200 and after a month all electrics started playing up and the engine oil temp gauge had a mind of its own. Now it hunts and wont idle. replaced injectors fuel pump egr valve etc etc . cut your losses Volvo are not as good as they were 6 years ago. FORD is prob why.
