Sod this for a game of soldiers. Calling Volvo UK in the morning and I hope to god someone has got a very good answer for me.

Ray Chapman Motors - As long as there is a hole in my bottom you will be by far the most incompetent set of people I have ever encountered.

Oh dear, what a shower of ****

Rang 08457 564636 and spoke to Suni Adi, explained the situation and was put on hold for 20 minutes, whilst he rang the dealer, RAY CHAPMANS, YORK.

Came back and said that they still did not know what the fault was, claimed the car had been refuelled everytime and apologised for never cleaning it.
Not good enough, asked for him to callback and speak to Duncan Chapman

He was unavailable, so I ended the call and rang Volvo back on 01628 477977

They have just called back and say the car will be refuelled, cleaned and ready to collect tomorrow afternoon. This is despite the dealer not being happy about sending the car out, they would prefer to keep it a while longer.
THEY HAVE HAD IT FOUR TIMES IN THE LAST 2 MONTHS, HOW LONG DO YOU NEED!!!!!!!!!!!
The dealer, Service manager has also called my mother to apologise for telling lies about refuelling.

6 Volvo's since 1988. 340, 440, 460, 440, S60 and the current S40.
All utterly reliable, without a single part failure, until now. The current one has been the worst by a country mile.

I too have a Volvo, an 02 V70 D5, which will not be going to York for servicing.

WORD OF MOUTH, ITS A POWERFUL THING

Might be booking it in a bit sooner though.
Booked mine in this morning with the same fault - airbags, anti-skid and failure to start. Had to trailer it to the showroom at a cost of £60. Girl on the counter says they may go for a "goodwill" refit from Volvo. As I just paid out £160 for an ignition switch refit - another inherent fault - I will scrap the car rather than pay up to £1500 to sort out Volvo's failings on a 2005 S40 with 26000 miles from new.

Ray Chapman Motors ahve just called my father to ask how he was getting on with his car.

What a shame that two days after they "repaired" the car it was sold to Mill Volvo Knaresborough who have since sold the car on.

Dad now has a V50 DRIVe which having driven myself last week is a huge improvement.

Ride, NVH, Gearbox (5 speed) all much much better than 04 2.0d S40 and it is soooooooooooo economical

OK on back roads but something of an issue if the ABS was triggered on the motorway!

By getting out of the car locking it, then unlocking it again and restarting this reset the safe mode and the car drove and seemed to brake normally (provided the ABS was not provoked). Looked at by my local Volvo specialist who checked the faults using the usual diagnostics and booked the car in for a new sensor. After fitting this, whilst it cleared down lots of fault codes, this revealed a whole new batch!

Turned out to be the highly complex 'black box' and braking system valve interface with the brake pump. Only sold as a single unit with the pump and a hefty £950 plus fitting and VAT. ( I see the mention of a £1500 repair in the thread above, this is the standard dealer price for the work I had done - just beware trying to do this 'on the cheap' - read on) It is a one and a half hour job to fit and then requires a manufacturers software down load to complete the installation - and my specialist said he could not do the job because of this and I would have to go to a main dealer.

Car was 'under warranty' from a small time dealer who insisted his mechanic would fix it and following 2 months off the road I eventually got the car back. The story was that they got a second hand unit and fitted it - however this completely disabled the car which had to be recovered on a low loader to the nearest Volvo dealer for the software down load to get it to work. Was it cheaper than going to a Volvo dealer who could have done the job in 2 days - probably not in view of all of the grief this caused - except thankfully I did not pay for this repair the small time dealer paid for it all.

Fortunately I have use of a cosmetically challenged R plate V40, worth a fraction of the V50's value, but I would swap its old technology for the "too clever by half" electronics of the V50 any day. You will see my latest post where my V50 is now once more beset by jaw dropping electical issues rendering it unusable - my 4th but worst Volvo for costly repairs/electrical unreliability.
I can really relate to your thread, on the 23rd December I hit the brakes aggressively in my 54 reg S40 and the car has never been the same. By doing this it seems to have avtivated many, many problems, Up to this moment the car was perfect, now I'm without a car, each time I go to start it I get multiple messges: 'Brake failure' 'immobiliser, see manual' and various other messages. On occassion it does start perfectly but this only lasts a for a short time before the 'brake failure' message appears, once the car is turned off who knows when it will start again. At the moment I am just gathering information about this problem before I attemp to repair it. I find it hard to understand how Volvo have got away with manufacturing these vehicles with such inherrant problems which have been clearly identified on this forum. I do believe that Volvo are actually manufacturing vehicles 'not fit for pupose' and making large profits on extionate repair bills.

This happened on my S60 a couple of years ago. It was jsut a dodgy sensor on the brake pedal (I'm guessing for ABS and DSTC) the brakes worked fine and they changed the sensor under warranty.

Apparently its a very common fault and doesn't take long to change the sensor.

Likely cost of repairing your car is £15-£20. I had the same thing every year on the same day after MOT done. Impossible and highly suspect. When you had MOT done and when when your problem began? Car fixed or not yet? Kind regards.

WoW! 4 year old thread resurrection?

Not so sure you'll get an answer due to age of thread but you never know.
