Default More gearbox woes

Hi all.

Got the replacement box fitted and it drove fine, just a bit of a fight sometimes to get into a higher gear. After a long motorway drive last night it's now stuck in fifth. I can get into neutral but not any other gear. Ideas?

I'm assuming from your previous thread that the new box is a Renault. Have you replaced the bushes in the gear linkage? most importantly the front ones by the gearbox. Also have you tried adjusting the gear linkage since the gears have become difficult?

My previous V40 had the Renault box and although it was very good the gear linkage adjustment was very, very, critical. For the first 100,000miles there were no issues, but I regularly had to change the bushes about every 50,000mls up to when it was scrapped at 370,000mls. The adjustment of the linkage made a huge difference to the changes with only a minute amount of adjustment.

I would try that first before suspecting the box. If that fails, I suspect the fifth gear is troublesome as these boxes are know for fifth gear failure. No experience of that though.

Thanks ITSv40. Had the AA out and with some scuffed knuckles we found the box was fine and the gear lever was to blame. Ordered the bushes so can try them first, then try changing the lever.
