Wheel nuts (same as 240?)
Hi,
Does anybody know if I can use 240 wheel nuts on my 1973 164? Was there a change from SAE to metric, and if so when? I read about some things changing to metric in '74, but did that apply to wheel studs. Ideally, if someone has a 1973 140/160 and a 240 I would be eternally grateful if you would check whether a wheelnut from the latter fits the former!! Thanks John |

164 wheelnuts
Hi John
By looking at your pic I can't vouch for the countersink on your non-standard wheels. However, as luck would have it for you a) it isn't raining and b) I have a spares-164 and a pair of 240s here, so I've just been out with my wheelbrace! One 240 has ordinary hex wheelnuts (under plastic trim) but the other has slightly larger hex shouldered and shiney plated dome-head nuts, for use without trims. I took one from each to the 164 and they both fitted fine, however, again depending on your wheels, the dome-head plated ones may bottom out on the studs on the hub, so check length of stud protruding from, say, a short straight-edge across flats of countersink (around stud). I will do the same on 240 and standard 164 steel wheel for comparison. I have a set of second-hand plated nuts if interested. Paul |

Many thanks. The wheels on my car are Volvo ATS alloys. They have a countersink. The wheelnuts I fitted are, I believe, the normal nuts for a 164 steel wheel. They seem to fit right; i.e. the pitch angle seems right because they don't come loose. However, they are difficult to access to loosen or tighten because the central part of the wheel protrudes very close to the wheel nut, such that a wheelbrace will not fit, only a slim-line socket can be used. I therefore assume that my wheels are meant to be used with a longer domed, nut (like the type on a 240 GLT). A wheelbrace could then be used and of course they would look better, being exposed. So, how much would you want for the set of plated wheelnuts? And what condition are they in? Thanks again John |
