Possible to fit cruise control to S40 mk2 yourself?
Visited dealership, quoted £63 for cruise control kit as expected and £570ish for the software to make it work.
I can’t justify that. So... If I buy the equipment and fit it myself, Will it work without this software update? (me thinking it could have older software that’s compatible as standard?) Are tuner companies capable of making it compatible, and if so what sort of price should I expect? My car is a S40 (57 reg) 1.8 petrol |

No, it needs the softwsre. That hardware will simply be the buttons but without the download won't do a thing.

That really is mental.
It's 5 minutes to download the software and it was written 10+ years ago. Jeez, some days it's as if Volvo think they're up there with Audi and BMW with their prices. Ridiculous!

People say this but then... as a Software Engineer I understand the cost involved with writing software and at some point it has to be recuperated!

when you look at the Sheer number of cars that use That bit of software, Thousands of S/V40/50 series making That much profit every single time is taking the P. Volvo are VERY good at that, taking the P with prices for software £100 to make the Headlights switch work as it should, ££££ for the cruise £70+ to read the dtcs P Taken by the tankerfull the ONLY "justification" for the greedy high prices they charge is that Pure Greed

I'm just saying.. that's why software is expensive, it is a huge investment for a company to make up-front and then no promise of it making back the money, so this risk is offset by having high prices when selling it.

oh Please dont even Try that game with me
FYI 30+ years in IT thank you, i DO know how long, i ALSO know that the cost is a ONE OFF not to be used at a pathetic attempt to justify the Huge gouge that volvo Over charge each and EVERY time the gouge an owner. software is Only that Expensive as they Over charge, making the Dev costs back over the first few hundred cars, when they KNOW it will be needed over 10,000s is Greed pure and simple

As an electronics engineer/embedded software engineer myself, yes, I do now how long it takes to write software....All of the software effort is built into the overall cost of the development of the car.
There is no recouping when reprogramming units etc as in an ideal world, they wouldn't go wrong and need reprogramming, unless of course they've taken a leave out of Steve Job' book with planned obsolescence. The price they set is for profit and only profit at this stage.
