Default XC90 trip computer not working

Hi not sure if anyone can help me, I have a 2004 XC90 and the trip computer and warning messages don't work at all the screen on the left hand side of the dash is blank. The indicators work and main beam work but nothing happens when you press the read button on the end of the stalk. Not sure where to start with it, could it be a problem with the stalk or something else? Was hoping it might be something simple I can do myself or whether to take it to my local auto electrics place who are very good but not cheap?
Cheers

If its like the V70, then the DIM (drivers information module) was actually an optional extra, although every car I've come across seems to have it enabled. On the V70, you get message about door open, low washer fluid etc, so try one of those scenarios to see if anything appears. Another thing to check is whether the backlight is working - if not, you'll have dark text on a dark background.

Hi thanks for the replies I shone a torch on it and can't see anything, I didn't even think that it might not be fitted with it and that it could be an optional extra. I think I'll pop it down to my local Volvo dealers and see if they can tell me if it's fitted or not.
Thanks everyone.

I've had my XC90 just over a year, and for a couple of intermittend hours, the DIM has worked - giving info such as MPG which I have been able to scroll through. But for the rest of the time, it has not appeared.

I know that the back light is working, because "No Messages" appears when I start the car.

Has anyone had the same thing? Is there an easy fix?
