Default 440 non starter???

Got back to the 440 this afternoon after a short run, turned the key and - nothing. All usual lights on the dash, but no starter turning over (its a manual car, so inhibition switch was not the problem.
Eventually (after it cooled?) it did start as usual.
Question is - does this Volvo (B20 renault engine) have a relay between the ignition switch and the starter, or is it just like all the other older cars I've had and just has a solenoid on top of the starter?
I don't want to go looking for a little hidden relay if there isn't one involved in activating the starter!
Any answers gratefully received
The Haynes Manual by the way was not very helpful...........

Think I have worked this one out - no relay involved, just the starter solenoid (which is a kind of relay I guess)

Is it fixed now? I was thinking a temperature sensor problem because what you said about cooling down hehe.

It's likely to be the starter motor but you need it not to start ideally so you can do a simple test on the wiring, it needs to be properly diagnosed or you may just be jumping to conclusions...

Started OK this morning so (as usual) I will just drive it and wait for it to fail completely!! I am just relieved that it appears to be a solenoid/switch/wiring problem and not involving a relay or an ECU...............

Yeah, does sound like the solenoid on the starter.

Either that or maybe a loose spade connector attatching the switched live cable to it.
Had that before
