Body/Trim: Windscreen - bonded or not?

Hi knowledgeable Volvo folk

My 245 is having some attention to various bits of bodywork, one of which is a patch on the scuttle that needs the screen removing.

I thought that all 240s had bonded screens, but the body guy and another reliable source think otherwise.

It's not come out yet, but I'm preparing for when it goes back in.

What's a reasonable price for a new screen (not going through insurance) and can anyone recommend someone in the south east (Surrey, Sussex etc) who would know their 240 windscreen onions?

I used autoglazing back in 2026 and a new screen cost £216.

The guy that came to fit it said he’d changed hundreds, if not thousands of 240 screens but none for a while... couldn’t tell you his name or if he still works there though.

Perchance I spoke with your restorer yesterday and we both almost agreed your screen isn't bonded in. It seems to have the same style of rubber-mounted screen as my early '70s 145 and 164 due the style of windscreen surrounding strip, so your car being late '70s is probably the same.
The C-reg 240 I dismantled definitely had a bonded screen, complete with those plastic blocks along it and only visible when the screen is half-out, whilst the evil black gue was going off. I can't say when things changed (for the worse!) with Mr Volvo though.
If speaking with a windscreen supplier though, perhaps qualify the age of your car in case he has to order it specially.

I have several 244, earliest 1977, all have bonded screens, up to 90 have the plastic blocks set around and the snap on chrome and rubber capping that snaps into them, the two later ones we have and actually the 1990 one now have the bonded screen with the attached rubber trim that goes in as one piece. I would say that is probably what they will want to put in yours if you are having a new one, unless yours is very different for some reason.

140/164 use the same screen and are 99% bonded

It was a rare option with the 140/164 to have teh screen held in with a rubber


There is a company in Brum who were charging about £50 for a new 240 screen

This is what I remembered being the case. The later one being a one piece assembly, which is what I will plump for...

I just needed reassuring.

Pics will follow soon enough, transpires I've owned the car for 5 years now and it's fast approaching it's 40th birthday!
