Default XC70 - 2.4 D5 - Euro 5 Vs Euro 6?

Apologies if this has been asked before, I have searched but couldn't find anything...

I'm interested in buying a late XC70 with the famous 2.4 5cyl D5 engine and I can see that Volvo sold this as a Euro 6 for the final year(s) of the XC70's production (i.e. 2015-2016).

I'm just wondering if anyone can shed some light on the differences / issues etc with this engine, versus the same engine as Euro 5 (i.e. what changes were made to make it into a Euro 6 spec)?

It was sold alongside the V70's at the time which (as far as I can tell) never received this version of the D5 engine, instead receiving the newer 2.0 D4 (180 odd bhp). Again does anyone know any reason for this?

Any info would be greatly appreciated 👍

The D4 engine was mated to the 8 speed automatic gearbox which wasn’t engineered for AWD in the P3 platform. AWD cars had the 5 cylinder engine and 6 speed box. Same also in the XC60 - fwd only cars got the VEA engine and 8 speed in those model years.

There’s not a significant difference between the E5 and E6 D5. I think it’s mostly down to different injectors and software. Unusually for a E6 - no ad blu….

Thanks for your reply. Does anyone know of any other differences between the two?

Are these engines generally reliable in Euro 5 & 6 form?
