You can always simply record the total mileage on the petrol receipt. Boring but safe !

Ok, so first tank full done yesterday evening and refilled with Shell V-power Nitro.

65 litres (wasn't quite empty), 516 miles.
OBC showed 37.6mpg average at the end.
Calculated, I make it 36.1mpg.

Just over 9000 miles on the clock and about 40% of that mileage was stop/start in Birmingham, so I'm pretty happy.

My vRS would have returned about 45mpg under similar conditions, so the XC60 is about 20% less efficient for that mix of driving - however, it's more than 20% more comfortable, more than 20% safer, more than 20% more powerful, and I'm more than 20% happier.

I love my new car, it is frigging awesome.

Worse than that! I take a photo of the main dash so that shows total mileage, and a photo of the My Car Statistics consumption data. Those upload automatically to Dropbox so I have them on my PC when entering the figures.

The strangest thing has now happened. I zeroed everything on fill up, and have been checking when I start the car on a morning that the trip miles is the same on the statistics and the odometer. It has been until yesterday afternoon, when after a 60 ish mile trip, the Odometer Trip Meter shows 99.9 miles, but the My Car Statistics trip meter shows 100.9 miles.

I have got a new job and now start at 7.30am and leave at 4pm and miss most of the commuters. And as the roads are quiet I am gatting 41.3mpg.

Well impressed with that...

Smile Volvo XC60 experience, 2 weeks in

I recently purchased a 1 year old XC60 SE Lux Nav Geartronic D5 AWD Polestar. I got it from Rybrook in Chester and drove it back to Northern Ireland. I love the look of the car and the apparent quality image. However, 2 weeks later I have some observations that I would like to get clarified by other users.

The car is very noisy at low rpm and vehicle speeds. Inside the cabin, it sounds like a London taxi. Accelerate and it get much better and more refined. The power available is really good and not much can touch it when accelerating from 50/60 MPH to 70/80.

I live in the country, bumpy roads and hills. The car seems to rattle and creak a fair bit. It seems like the rear passenger door behind the driver is rattling over bumps. The suspension is also very firm and every rut and imperfection on the road is felt. My last car was. Skoda Octavia VRs DSG. It was far quieter and more refined on the road than this Volvo. This was a surprise to me.

Having said all of the above, I love the car, it feels sure footed and will be great in the winter when it snows, as it does a lot where I live. My previous Skoda and BMWs were useless in the snow.

My final gripe is the appallingly bad MPG. I have been driving carefully this last week trying to improve MPG, but cannot get better than 36MPG.

Anyway, I am glad I bought the car and will no doubt get used to its imperfections and the noise.

You mention snow. Don't forget you should be fitting winter or 'all weather' tyres. AWD alone will not guarantee a safe drive in snow. When you do this, get the tracking checked and look for uneven tyre wear or evidence of kerbing on the rims.
Fuel consumption might also improve with new treads.
The Nokian Weatherproof is rated C for efficiency, A for wet performance, and a good noise level of 69dB.

Bulleteer.
1. The rattle/creak noise you mention could be a pretty well know issue - in that the passenger seat beat buckle if rotated can knock against the plastic door pillar trim. Next time just reach across and twist it around.
2. If you are getting 36 mpg you are doing pretty well, over my two XC60's doing 45,000 I am looking at c33mpg for the same spec as yours. If you have Polestar there is not much point in hanging back is there especially when that D5 sounds so great on full chat......!!
