Default Auto Transmission warning light

Hi I have a 1995 850 T5 20 Valve CD with 158,00 miles on clock. It has been off the road for about 6-7 years, although I do start it now & then. Recently I decided to get oit back on the road, as my everyday runabout 850 10 valve is beginning to show signs of stress.
So I started it up second turn of the key with new fuel & moved it around the drive a few times, everything seemed fine. The only warning light that came on was the low coolant level one, which styed on even afet I had topped it up.
So I didn't do anything with the car for a couple of days, but when I started it up the next time, the auto transmission warning arrow was flashing and would not go off. I have checked the fluid level & its ok. It drives ok & gears are changed. Any ideas what could be causing the light to stay on?

You need to read the fault codes really. Did the autobox light start flashing after you had driven it a bit (which would potentially indicate a fault with one of the sensors either the RPM or vehicle speed).

Could be the mode selector switch in the console (try switching it several times) or the PNP switch (with ignition off run the lever rapidly through the selections several times to clean the contacts)

I had this years ago once on my C70 T5. I was commuting to/from London in it daily, there was no difference to operation or running but, when I got it to the local Volvo indy with Vida etc, it was a relatively cheap ish sensor (£60 IIRC) that goes onto the gearbox.

I have a 98 V70 and the indicator has started flashing on mine today! It was fine earlier, I went into town left it parked and it started flashing as soon as I started the car to come home. Obviously I drove fairly slowly but it seems to be driving fine so I'll try moving the lever a few times if that doesn't do it I'll run it down to the local garage in the morning.

Thank you. Operating the lever a few times with ignition off seems to have solved that problem. Still have another warning light that is more problematic. I will start a new thread about that.

Default Auto Transmission Fault

After my original post I took it out on the by-pass for an "Italian Tune Up" It went fine until I hit about 70 and the gearbox warning arrow came on. I took slowly home & parked up with the ignition off for a couple of days. The next time I started it the light was out, so I took it for another test drive & the light came on at about 70 again. I put request for help out on the forum and the general response was that as it had been stood for 7 years, was that it could be the solenoids had seized and it was only running in the lower gears causing the gearbox to overheat & throw the warning light. . So I took it to a gearbox specialist in Bristol & they ran a few tests. Their diagnosis was either the operating solenoids in the box were shot or that the drive bands needed replacing. Quote to fix the solenoids was £650 or if it needed a complete rebuild it would be from £1800. I haven t got that sort of money, so I found a used unit in North Wales on ebay for £150 & fitted it myself. 2500 trouble free miles so far (I am touching wood). A good flush & replacement of the gearbox oil was my first action after installing it though. Volvo say that the oil doesn't need changing, but just about everybody says it does. The oil should appear pink on the dipstick or very near it. If it is at all discoloured brown or worse, then the oil needs changing, or maybe the drive bands are shot & its already too late. So my advice would be to change the oil and flush the gearbox out using the method outlined by Robert DIY or search the forum for other posts on how to do it. The gearbox change was lengthy & involved dropping the sub-frame, it is not a job for the faint hearted, but can be achieved at home with an engine crane, good trolley jack & adjustable engine support beam. There is a good explanation with pictures on MathewsVolvo site too. Good Luck

I must finish my thread to bring auto-transmissions back to life, but ahem, for some reason it's a contentious subject. As predicted it got rail-roaded by an idiot banging on about 2006 boxes, and for no apparent reason. Will finish it soon.

In short, first flush. A filter is essential. A cooler if you 'drive' it. if you're mincing about at 10K a year, flush often instead. Correct level is critical and hard to achieve.

In my experience, without optional cooling, (not the internal warmer/cooler) ATF won't stay pink much over 30K. Solenoids are too pricey for most of us to replace, and they don't seem to need it anyway. I had a set out and cleaned them. It's crud in there that gets at them - I followed that Jockinese bloke on YT. Do before the whole box gets trashed with the flaring.

It's not a fairground ride, a good box is super-smooth in all changes.
