Your engine is a Renault 1.9 engine, usually found in the Megane or the Laguna, the engine if put in a French car are very unreliable and usually have lots of electrical issues. Volvo fixed the engine and it should easily go to around 300k miles before you have to think about doing anything internally, Its a very very reliable engine, and as its French some parts (like the turbo) are pretty easy to get.

I went with this model of V40, I was looking at getting the later S40 with the 2.0D engine, but its a Ford 2.0D which is now known for DPF failures (£1000 a go) as well as poor MPG and general issues. You have the most sought after Volvo for fuel economy, space, reliability and just general awesomeness, although im slightly biased

I spent about 3 months researching into different cars to go for that was worth paying a bit extra for, I can't find a more reliable, safer, comfortable, better specced or better value car on the market. Also the engine is pretty tunable from what I have found with the diesel tuning box I have fitted lol not known many cars to torque steer in 3rd

I always wondered as mine says "Made in Belgium" not a country renowned for its car makers! I bought it (F reg 720 petrol) 5 years ago for £300 and it has taken me to work in Germany , Belgium, Italy, and 5 trips back to UK for MOT, the mileometer had stopped at 350000 before i got it, I live in the backwoods of Italy, the locals are always surprised when I get to the bar through the snow (this week we have had a 4.5 earthquake, minus5 frost, and now up to a metre of snow, no snowploughs, except in town 20km away,I am really a LandRover man but wanted a bit better fuel consumption for Euro trips but being 6Ft5in tall most cars are a bit tight. I would say I have been quite pleased with it, you cant buy much at that price that is still useable. This morning even the Carabinieri asked how I had got to the bar ! I guess the Volvo is just made for the job.

Can i just clarify something about the "Ford" 2.0D its more PSA than anything, as for DPF failures they are pretty low very few UK 2.0D's have a DPF at all. The DPF is a service item though...at 75K.

Poor MPG? In fact it is not to bad still get around 48/49 out of mine...

General Issues yeah there is a few but very few modern engines actually do not have general issues whatever the engine much of which was forced on car makers by the EU!

You could always remove the DPF if you are worried about that part of the engine system? MPG wise I don't think it is bad for the power output. There are obviously better out there but in general not bad at all. You could also remap the ECU and get better MPG figures. I'm getting mine done this weekend! Can't wait!
