Hello, I'm new here - I've always been an admirer of the p1800 - particularly the es and I'm now considering buying one, ideally unrestored but road worthy... does anyone in the UK know anything about a light blue P1800es reg 'MHD 450L'? I suspect it's been off the road since at least 2000. Any help or tips on buying would be appreciated! I've owned plenty of classic cars and motorcycles in the past but never an old volvo... cheers Korky.

Welcome to the forum
There are several buyers guides on the interweb to help in addition to information on this forum - see for example this one => http://www.volvotips.com/index.php/p...0-buying-tips/ As for a specific vehicle you can access general information about a car via the DVLA online by simply entering the registration The Bosch injection system is often viewed as being a bit of a pig but once you get used to it (as with many things) I believe it to be manageable (my experience is with similar-ish Mercedes systems)

Korky;
Welcome to the forum! If you are serious about owning an 1800, I'd read around this and other fora and familiarize myself with its characteristics, most of which should be fairly familiar if you've owned vintage vehicles before. The mechanicals are of high quality engineering and materials, and spares are readily available as they are shared with other models spanning a long manufacturing period. Rust is naturally a problem...my advice is always to buy the best sheetmetal you can afford, if you are not going to be the one doing the body repairs and restorations, but must pay other parties for this work. I can't say I echo the "pig" description of the brick reliable Bosch ignition system...incorporating an effective anti-theft system of its day, but which has also flustered the rightful owners, when there is absolutely no reason for this...once understood, it is straightforward and conventional to maintain and troubleshoot, and its weakness (Ign Key fatigue and breakage) is also well understood and documented, as well as effective preventative measures. I'd more apply that descriptive to the Lucas/Smiths supplied harness and components. I invite you to peruse the tech articles of the sw-em.com page. Cheers from Connecticut! |
