Has Anyone.....?
Hi All,
Has anyone dug out there snow chains? I bought mine years ago but never had a chance to play with them, until today what a great invention. Only managed a few miles then I ran out of snow and decided it was safer to take them off again as the vibration got bit too noticeable! Scott |

I’ve tried them in the past but now moved onto tyre socks which are so much easier to fit
Today I tried out my tyre socks on my S80 D5 and what a car I live at the bottom of a hill and it seems I’m one of very few drivers who can get out of the estate Regards Chris |

I found snow socks to be of no use at all when I was in the Cairngorms, snow beating down and they just kept coming off. They tore in the end. I guess they are only as good as the oaf putting them on and when you have freezing cold hands, wet gloves and getting pretty annoyed I suppose that might have been my downfall. Anyway I launched them a mile in a fit of range and swear words and proceeded on getting even more stuck.
I tell you what was good tho, a tin of spray gluey stuff that I got reduced for 50p. You spray it on the tyre and the ground around the tyre and leave it 5 mins. It’s not de icer it forms a tacky resin allmost. More use on compacted snow or ice but for 50p I bought it and kept it in the car. It got me out of a tricky spot. Can’t remember the name of it though.

I don't have a set but was tempted to borrow some and have a see how well they work. However for snow deep enough to use them I didn't think it was worth risking damage to the car for a non-essential journey.

I used them on my caddy van in 2010 and they work as advertised in compacted snow but are no good on road surfaces that aren't snow covered.
I have to negotiate a quarter mile private lane going uphill to get to the main road and once the snow has been hard compacted it's just white ice. Only four wheel drive or snow chains got out.

Yeah ditto that driving on the black top yesterday with my chains on was as if I had a pair of dogs tied to my wheels, vibrations are bad even at low speeds and handling becomes a bit scary.

I *think* you can be pulled by plod for using chains on roads that are not snow covered, may be a urban myth but who knows as if a hgv had chains on it could chew the road surface.
On a side note in 76 my Dad had a Morris Minor that had what was known as 'Town and country' tyres fitted. He also had snow chains, we were the only car on the the road in town and ended up delivering bread to the local shop. Snow was snow back then, not this lightweight stuff you get now!
