66-plate S90 - where to get 4 new wheels?
0 Introduction
Never liked diamond cut alloys - usually so gaudy, not at all the understated elegance that one would like, and so expensive to refurb. But they're what came with my 2/h 66-plate S90. They were originally covered by alloy insurance but already 3 of 4 have reached the limits of what can be shaved off, apparently. (Not all me!) And all 4 are looking very rough. 1 Question 1 What size are they? No idea. 16 in .. 17 in .. 19 in? What about width? What about matching up the 5 studs? How do I tell? Obviously a very expensive item to get wrong. (Or right, for that matter.) The tyre spec is 255/35 R 20 97W. Do I need the VIN to be absolutely certain? 2 Question 2 Where to go for replacements. Volvo dealer? Wheel specialist? And then just choose? Really want to get the more easily refurbished (and usually less gaudy) non-diamond cut. 3 Question 3 Actually what I would REALLY like are good old-fashioned steel wheels with a chrome hubcap. (Like on my D-regd Amazon of old.) I think they'd look terrific on the S90. But, again, how to guarantee the right size, right width, right stud placement, right everything? More than the usual thanks for any assistance you can offer - this is so important to get absolutely right! Postscript You know the sort of scrape one gets against a kerb: usually only an inch or two, a few degrees of arc, not even very deep, but dead ugly. Is there a home cure that works at least cosmetically to reduce or merely conceal the worst of the damage? |

Do I just mean "rim" not "wheel"? Sorry - I know nothing of the architecture. Maybe there's a robust basic wheel that does all the work / load-bearing /etc; with a separate surface rim (like a vinyl LP), which is the thing I've dinked, and all that needs replacing?? (I'm probably making this up.)

How about simply having your diamond cut alloys stripped and powder coated? This shouldn't cost much and they'd then look like new but a good deal more plain. Maybe a darker silver than before? Nothing for your insurance company to quibble over, as the car would still be standard.

Judging by the tyre size they are 20" rims (255 mm wide, 35% of that deep, and 20" diameter. You can get the appropriate size that fits from a decent web site but given they seem to have taken quite a battering maybe what you need is something smaller with a higher profile tyre to keep the rim away from the kerb. Maybe an 18" from another S90 - and as said maybe get it powder coated to hide the gaudiness.
If you change the wheels though you will obviously need new tyres and you will have to tell your insurer.... |

I have a set of immaculate 20” wheels complete with part worn Contisilent tyres for sale. Stored in a shed on their side, with a tarp over the top to protect them from light. They were on an XC90 for about six months. Wanted a set of Winter tyres on another set of wheels but never got around to wearing the replacement wheel’s original tyres out.
I would take £120 each for them. Buyer collects. They were cleaned and protected with alloy wheel protection spray before being stored. Not a mark on them.

I’m still after 18s and trying to spend as little as possible.
I also have the 20s which look lik3 bloody wagon wheels and are a pitter to clean. I’m after the bargain of a lifetime, until then I’m just lumping it. |
