Default 18mm wheel lugs?

Just bought a 2011 V50 which has black alloy wheels (that wasn't the reason I bought it btw ). I took off one wheel lug today to check I was ordering the correct replacements for the security nuts I don't want, and was surprised to find it's 18mm. It's in good condition/not chewed and they're all definitely 18mm. I can only find reference to 19mm lugs on this car. Am I missing something?

Isn't it 18mm without the 'protective' cap, 19 mm if the cap is on (not destroyed by using pneumatic tools)?

Nope, there are no protective caps on the lugs, plus the OEM part is 19mm spanner/socket size.

I think what is being referred to as a protective cap may be misleading you...

Each lugnut has a shiny stainless outer (19mm head) over the mild steel thread and body. It seems that liberal use of impact guns will cause the outer layer to break off.

Well in the absence of any other explanation here or anywhere else, I'll accept that as a definite possibility. All 16 standard lugs are a perfect 18mm fitment and bear no signs of damage (it also has 4 security lugs) so I'll accept this as another school day. I've ordered a full set of black replacements and have polished my 19mm socket in readiness. Thanks.
