Don't get too carried away. A Volvo 240 roof can be damaged by human weight. I've seen a 244 roof very neatly but seriously caved in. Someone delirious from medical treatment jumped on to the Volvo from the top floor of a famous and ancient teaching hospital. The roof and rear window were transformed in to a three dimensional V shape.
But then again Volvos are safe. The patient was checked over in A&E, found to be unharmed and put back in to bed. One of my then colleagues was there shortly before me, saw the incident happen, and needed a stiff cup of tea. It would be interesting to have seen the car owner's insurance claim. I guess the thing was so totally improbable that the insurer probably accepted the claim immediately and paid up. |

49.jpg Using 3 square Thule bars, and tie downs under the hood and to the trailer hitch, I drove 250 miles like this. That is an 8' long pressure treated picnic table. It took three strong men to lift it up there. I've also driven 20 ish miles (on bumpy paved roads) with large, wet hemlock beams on that rack. 2x 13'x 8x8" and 3x 8'x 4x4" all at the same time. I'd love to hear the upper capacities that others have manages on their roofs? |
