When did this become a known issue? There were a few cases of the original power struts being replaced under warranty but since the new design was implemented (the current version that you have) I think this is the first case being reported here - hardly a known issue

Default Any luck with Volvo on boot strut?

Hello, we have a 2011 xc60 and the drivers tailgate / boot strut has done exactly the same thing - spring inside has snapped and broken through the plastic cover and the boot won't close. have checked car breakers yards here in Northern Ireland and in GB but one available and all have said its because this is a very common fault with the Volvo electrical struts so they go out the minute they come in. Also been told we need to replace both struts and reprogramme it.
Just wondering did you get anywhere with Volvo goodwill? We are thinking of trying that ?
Many thanks

Talking Solved on my 2011 D5 215 (2012 model)

I know this thread is old but I hope this helps someone else as I had exactly the same failure, drivers side strut became swollen, noisy, eventually broke.

I also received the same info, replace both, needs a software update or they don't work, so I decided to order the parts and installed them in the car park outside the parts / workshop so that I could get the software bit done after replacing them.

Long story short I replaced 1 and tested it and hey presto it worked like a charm, back to the nice calm sound I'd always had and NO software update required. I then return the offside one which I didn't need so all in the part cost me £235+VAT. Don't be fooled into replacing both, I'll report back here after a few weeks or if I have a problem from not replacing both but right now I think I've saved myself a small fortune and hope it helps someone else.

I found an excellent video on youtube on how to replace and took less than 30 minutes, all you need is a hex bit and a flat head screw driver to complete the job.

Default Any advice on where to order the parts?

Hi, I have this same problem on my 2013 XC60. The struts have been very noisy for months and now one of the struts bent completely - I had to remove the strut to get the boot closed at all. Same problem, been quoted £800 at the Volvo garages to get it fixed and they refuse to just order me the parts, saying I cannot fix it myself as I need the software update or they won’t work.

Any advice on where people ordered the parts from?

Many thanks!

Default Order the part from local stealer

I just rang my local stealer, gave them the number plate and they ordered both struts for me. I'd suggest you just got a grumpy member of staff and you should call again and ask for the parts department.

I took the tools with me and did it in the volvo car park. Once I'd tested that replacing 1 worked I returned the other unopened one for a refund. When you get them make sure to ask which part number is left and right so you open the right box. They are not marked left and right.

Worst case scenario it doesn't work, install the 2nd and get them to run the update but in my D5 (215) 2012 model it worked like a charm and is still working a month later perfectly

Here is the youtube I followed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dmq2MpnG9Co
