V70 Body/Trim: V70 rust holes!

Hi all.

Picking at the scab on the OS strut top on my 2002 V70 has finally resulted in a hole. There’s also an area on one jacking point that will need repair and the area of floor above the fuel tank is showing signs of corrosion. Are these common rot spots on the V70? I didn’t think these models were particularly rot-prone. It has 202k on the clock and needs the front crank seal replacing to fix an oil leak. It’s probably time to find another V70 when the MOT runs out!

It’s a shame as I’ve recently replaced the whole interior and fixed various neglected aspects including replacing the whole front suspension.

Do any other V70 owners out there have experience with the dreaded tin worm?

I think it was maybe a manufacturing problem, my 2003 also has some rust underneath, visible only when removing the strut assembly, it's caused by the strut bearing plate - made of metal, that sits directly against the paint on the car, plus it's being pressed when the three top bolts are tightened down.

I was just reading your thread about this issue!

It does seem to be an issue on some of these cars, however I broke up and scrapped a 2002 S60 with 200k on the clock that had been well used and abused and there wasn't any rust anywhere on it. I know the strut tops were good as I cut through both of them when I eventually chopped it up for scrap.

I'm undecided weather to repair or scrap mine. I think a £50 welded repair should do it, but it would look unsightly and of course I'd know there was still rust creeping away underneath in other areas.

i had the same strut tower rust started as a thin rust line and progressed in to something bigger . I .had a 1in wide plate welded over the top at the mot station its not pretty but its out of sight

Depends if you want an MoT plate or a repair that will cut out all the rust and will be invisible. One’s £50 the other probably 4x that.

I've had more of a poke around and the strut tower is now full of holes, it's now not worth repairing so looks like I'll probably break it for spares.

Check those strut tops folks, if there's any signs of rust coming through it's probably already too late!

shop around there are garages that specialise in welding if not try your local stock car driver or banger racer those guys are great at body welding

It's not worth it if I'm honest, not when there's similar V70s around with little or no rust. It's cheaper to just get another.

I also have a 2002 v70 but don't have rust in that area.

If you do decide to scrap the car let me know as I would be interested in buying your drivers seat, as mine is worn out.
