Is this the model without DPF issues? Any other issues I should be concerned about?
Anybody know how much the road tax is?
Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The later 200 BHP model is the one to go for if your budget will cover it. R-Design models have stiffer suspension which some people like, some people don't. Also his bigger wheels (19" I think) with more expensive tyres and no spare wheel due to twin exhausts.

If any of that's an issue - look for an SE LUX.

No swirls flaps or DPF. Probably smoother than the later engines. Not lacking in power though for most situations. I use mine for towing a BIG caravan (1.85t) with no problems at all.
The splined sleeve issue in the bevel gear only applies to MY2003/2004 and most (if not all) have been fixed by now.
The 2005 163hp is at a sweet spot!

I've said it before , if I could have my facelift XC90 with a E3 D5 engine, that would be perfection for me and that's from someone who so far has had no dpf/swirl flap problems over the years.

Hi Tannaton,

Thanks for that. When you say 'later model' what year do you mean? What is the advantage of these later models? Also, will this 2011 model have the DPF issues that seem to plague many owners?

Thanks

I really wouldn't read too much into DPF issues.

Most DPF issues are not down to the DPF but usually some other fault which eventually impacts on the DPF.

People then go about cleaning or replacing the DPF but have not found out why it started playing up in the first place.

If everything is ok with the engine , the Turbo and the associated intercooler and pipework, the DPF will not make it's presence known and happily do it's own thing indefinitely.

One Caveat, modern diesels with a DPF do not like consistent short journeys as it never gives the DPF the chance to complete it's absolutely essential regeneration process and it will then start showing " Soot Filter Full" messages.

Unless your normal use is also going to include some longer journeys where the DPF can regenerate then I would steer clear of ANY modern diesel fitted with a DPF and buy a petrol car.

By later model I mean the 2012 MY onwards (i.e. those cars sold from around July 2011 onwards) these cars have the later 200 BHP engine which is more economical, refined and reliable - as well as more responsive and quicker. That's not to say the 185 units in the older models are bad, but if your budget gets you into that territory then the 200 cars are the ones to have, as you would expect it's broadly the same engine with revise cylinder head, intake, injectors, software etc. A few are on 11 plates, most 61 plates are 200 cars and probably all 12 plate onwards are. They also have a few interior and exterior updates including the LED rear lights and better Bluetooth I think.

If you are looking at 11/61 plate cars you can tell the new models by popping the registration number into Totalcarcheck.com and scroll to the bottom - it will tell you the BHP figure which is actually 197 for the later cars. You don't need to pay anything to get that information.

As said above - the Volvo DPF system is very good and problems are rare on healthy cars, even those that only get occasional runs at speed.

A quick way to tell if one of the 61 plate cars has the 200bhp engine. It will have a larger D5 emblem on the rear. Any that has the full colour code bumpers and led rear lights have the later engine. They also have the DRL led light in place of the front fogs. The Bluetooth does both calls and streams music.
