Engine issues are practically unheard of these days, except in the odd case of bad luck. Even with massive neglect and abuse you seem to get away with murder. With the cars I've ragged mercilessly I've found it's brakes and suspension components that suffer, and eventually gearboxes, clutches and other drivetrain parts. It's been many years since I have personally blown up an engine or heard of anyone doing the same!
These days I mostly drive sedately in my Volvo, although I can't say the same for my Mk1 MX5.... |

My driving style isn't on the list
Medium hard Acceleration, low revs through the gears, then drive like a granny in fifth/overdrive.

More number 4 in the S40, but something like number 2 in the C70. The S40 is great and I really enjoy driving it in a gentle manor with the knowledge that a good prod of the right pedal the 2.0D has more than enough pulling power to get it moving whereas I find the 2.0T's unique 5 cylinder noise is too much to resist hence I was never gunna have a D5 S40 haha

Eh? Apparently I replied to this at 9:01 this morning? I didn't, I'm not guilty your honour! As it happens though I have noticed I said number 4 in the S40 but I meant number 5 though I'm starting to think with its propensity to fall apart number 6 is more appropriate lol

I drive moderately hard and floor it from time to time - and have no issues.
I've had the D5 for only a few weeks but the engine note under acceleration is evocative, it just wants you to put your foot down. I've never been thrown back into my seat before and it's addictive knowing I can power past the little scroats in their tuned Puntos or Fiestas in absolute comfort.

I used to floor it every where and had tones of problems ... now drive like a snail for several reason.
1. I have to keep up the volvo image 2. They cars been lowered 3. I want this car to last me long term so driving slower is always going to make the car last longer than constantly abusing parts (I do now go to the dragstrip though as well, also do my best to keep it well looked after through the race) Mine is a T5 so I just try to look after my turbo etc as well. |

I think length of journeys is a bigger driving factor, one not taken into account

Volvo S40 2012 1.6D Drive - SE Lux. -- Small bit of torque but lacks power.
Got the car in Nov 2015. I drive it hard but respectable daily from cold. Where i live its very hilly and can include big climbs from the start. I have done 3100 miles in it and got 36mpg from it so far. Its been into Volvo for an oil leak so far, but that was due to an existing fault. |
