Has anyone tried to simply spray paint the windshield bottom cowling? Mine looks pretty bad/faded and I've got some extra spray paint that matches the rest of the car handy.

Just watch for the pins as they will fly off! apart from that, easy!

Update - I got my new linkage in without issue. I also took some detailed pics of the innards of the old one for anyone who is still trying to figure out a cheap fix. A couple of tips:

1) detaching the linkage from the motor SHOULD definitely be done at the ball joint NOT at the axle nut of the motor. This will avoid having to do ANY adjustments. To make the detachment as easy as possible first take each of the three nuts off each wiper base. Then push the bases downwards and out of the frame. Then take the four bolts off the motor mount at the far end. With some maneuvering you will be able to pull the linkage out just enough to have full access to the ball joint. I got mine out by gently tapping a ball joint fork into it. Worked like a charm

2) reattaching the ball joint with the replacement linkage was a piece of cake. With the motor still unfastened from its mounting bolts lube it up a bit and then use some 12" channeloc plyers to push the socket back in. Once you have done this slide the linkage in all the way and put on the nuts.

3) I included a few pics of the used linkage. In then you will see that both the drivers side and the passenger side attachments are severely worn. Interestingly it is not the linkage itself that gets worn down it is the removable plastic cylinder. With this in mind you could probably avoid having to take the linkage apart to fix the issue. All you would need are the two cylinders. These can easily be removed. Just pop off the clip and washer and the cylinder comes right out.

4) note the following in the pics below: a) the axle in one pic has black dust on it. This is actually caused by the wearing of the plastic cylinder over time. B) the cylinder opening can clearly be seen in a few pics. It is clear that the movement of the wiper arm is due to the wear on the cylinder itself. It is supposed to be a circular opening but you will note that the wear has created an oval opening instead. D) the wear is apparent through the entire length of the cylinder. As a result any fix would need to address the oval shape throughout the entire cylinder (or at least at the top and bottom).

Some very good guides and tips here, especially v40alex and pierremcalpine with good quality pictures to illustrate the issues. Just doing my linkage today. Black plastic cylinders are definitely the sacrificial material here. I will try to put a couple of pictures up (not great with technology) but just in case it doesn't work, my passenger side is twice as bad as the driver's side. I have no wall material left on the most significantly worn top face area of my passenger side cylinder and what wall material is left down the side of the cylinder is so thin it is cracking longitudinally along the cylinder. Looks like I'm doing the job just in time.

Have any of you considered periodically greasing the pins where they contact inside the cylinders to reduce the wear? It wouldn't be a difficult job, only the plastic bottom windscreen cover and wiper arms would have to come off, along with the c clips and washers. Are the properties of certain lubricants going to decay the plastic cylinders at a faster rate? Can anyone recommend a known plastic safe lubricant/grease if it sounds like a good idea?

Anyway, time for a couple of pictures...

Nope, denied due to some "security token" technicality. Bloody technology.

Default Linkage

The original Volvo linkage part number is 30850294

On the Polish volvo forum I discovered that someone has changed the plastic cylinder to copper (muff size 12.08x14.08x14.00 mm). But because wearing of a cylinder is larger on one side, the hole in the center of the rotation axis must be drilled precisely.
I also found on ebay, the offer from producer from Poland, who creates new linkages to S40 / V40 MK1. I contacted him but he told me that his part does not match the UK Volvo version.
But it looks exactly the same, so I think he was not right. And his cost of the new part starts from £28 with postage.
I have bought the used linkages yet. So if the problem will occur again, I will take a risk and change to this new part :-)

Default Wiper trim

After a windshield replacement the bottom wiper trim /windshield cowling is hovering above the glass about 0.3cm. After watching your photos I'm pretty sure they didn't reattach it correctly or broken/lost some of the plastic clips.
I'm taking the car back tomorrow to see if they can do something about it.
