Default CV gaiter

Dammit, another gaiter has split and this is a horrendous job namely getting the CV joint apart.

I'm thinking of using a stretch gaiter with the cone - looks to be simpler and quicker but are these type of gaiter any good? Will the oem volvo part stretch that much as I assume these are special stretchy material.

I've seen generic stretch ones that are cut to size - will one of these do the job or does it need to be oem?

I have had a good experience with Bailcast CV Boot Kit .

It is a gaiter that is split, so you can put it on without dismantling anything much.
You then glue the join back together using a special glue.

Check the dimensions (the outside diameter of the CV joint that you need to go around) and buy the appropriate size kit, and trim to fit.

The stretch-boot gaiters are a longer-term fix than the adhesive variety. Done properly, the split boot adhesive gaiters will get you out of a fix for a few weeks/months, but you really have to be very conscientious about the joint cleanliness when you affix the boot - very difficult with all the CV grease slopping around the area!

I cannot think of any professional garages that will use the split-boot gaiters, simply that they don't have the guarantee of integrity after the work is shipped out the workshop. Once you have got the hang of fitting a stretch-boot gaiter, they really are a doddle. The main thing is that they are better pre-fitted to the stretch cone (which you will need to order as a one-off tool at the same time as the gaiter) and with plenty of silicon spray-lube to help the rubber slide over the cone.

Because of the stretch nature of the rubber in the gaiter, they tend to be softer than the OEM gaiters, but that is no hardship if projectiles are kept clear of them in service - they tear easily if cables and hoses are allowed to rub against them.

I fitted a stretch boot gaiter the other week on my 850 for the first time. At first I thought it was impossible to get the gaiter on as it would only stretch about half way up the cone!

When I was using my weight pushing the gaiter over the cone in a downward motion on the floor, it would work fine, but when trying to push horizontally to get it on the cv joint it seemed impossible. What I did was work it in the vertical position, sliding it up and down the cone many times to help stretch the gaiter. Then proceed to the cv joint in the horizontal position and with all your might and a bit more, it should go over.

The instructions said that the drive shaft and cv joint needs to be in a vice to do a proper job. Defeats the point of a stretch gaiter if that's the case!

I fitted a genuine volvo boot to my 850 last weekend and feel your pain, getting the driveshaft off is the easy part, separating the joint is a complete arse of a job even when you’ve done it before. Stretch boots are very appealing but I still went with a ‘proper’ one as I hope it’ll never need doing again now as it seemed very heavy duty!

thanks all.

thinking about it, the main effort is getting the drive shaft out of the strut.

Is the driver's side drive shaft (RH in UK) is as easy to pull out as other side, I seem to recall all I had to do was to give it a good tug.

Once out, holding the shaft in a vice to knock the circlip to split the joint was not that hard, in situ it was hours of cursing.

I guess I will replace both boots to avoid having to do this in the near future - are the inner and outer gaiters the same part?

Been using Bailcast rubber products since the very early 80's , man used to live in Euxton / Chorley & I have never had to complain about anything made by his company .

The supple rubber used made for very compliant gaiters that resisted ripping / cracking or generally disintegrating in use

Here's a pic of the outer boot I fitted for reference, it did include the extra (correct for my car) circlip not shown here as I'd already fitted that in the joint at this point.

Inner and outer are different parts as far as I know, certainly look a different size.

I've tried split-boots on my 850 didn't last long.
Then tried a stretch variety, that lasted longer .
In the end I got my tame mobile mec to fit 'proper' ones for me.

resurrecting an old post - in the end I had to take the driveshaft to my local garage as I was unable to remove the circlip to split the CV joint.
