Well, I'm a bit stumped this morning because yesterday I did 150 miles after topping up from cold to the max line. This morning there is no residual pressure and after replacing the cap and running for 20 seconds before repeating the removal of cap, there is no pressure build up.

There is also no coolant loss and its still on the max level

Ill get the new cap today and see if this works, the mayo was a minute amount but why was it there is the worry

Mayo in the coolant could be a breach of the oil cooler seals or on an automatic, it could also be a breach in the ATF cooling section of the radiator causing cross contamination.

Aye, lots of fun ahead I think.......The ATF cooler just sits on the back of the rad and isn't integral, maybe there is a heat transfer elsewhere that I am yet to learn about. Ive not looked for the oil cooler as yet. Bizarrely,, yesterday it did clunk into drive a couple of times for the first time but I'm putting this down to needing an ATF change as I tow with it. I do hope I'm not heading into a period of chasing faults around a cosseted low mileage minter.

FKIN FORD Fix Or Repair Daily
I was loosing coolant, the rad had failed and was dropping at the offside. the sponge along the bottom was soaking with it

Im now thinking the pressure probably burst it if the HG failed. Im still loosing coolant but not now via a leaking rad. Heres the killer which I was keeping in reserve. There is a tiny amount of mayo at the bottom of the expansion tank and on the end of that little bleed pipe where it feeds into the expansion tank.
Its very probably a minor HGF and im sick as **** if that is the case. Ill have to book it in next week somewhere in the northumberland area as im going on this holiday, not even FORD are going to stop me. Ive got a very good mate with an XC 90 and a disco 3 that has offered to lend me either car but I might as well take it and get it fixed whilst i'm on holiday.
Whats your view on these combustion gas test kits?
Cheers
Al
never had much luck with combustion gas test kits , have a look for streams of tiny bubbles rising in the coolant bottle .

Since I changed my rad on my 2012 XC70 Im still loosing a bit of water but not from any rad leak, The strange thing is every morning, stone cold I remove the cap and the level rises but not back to full.

I seem to be storing a lot of pressure in the system which may be blowing water past the O ring seals at the rad, maybe the cap is in need of change!

Anyone know if and where the bleed is located?

Thanks
No bleeder. Just fill her up, drive around block, check, full again, check fill again. Took me a couple of days before I finally got level right.

Just to tidy this up, the coolant loss is over, it just needed topping up a few times and seemed to settle after i ran it with the heating on for 10 minutes. Ive just done 1000 miles with the caravan without loosing coolant so im pretty happy that its not a problem.

I did fit a new pressure cap from the stealer so this may or may not have been an influence.

After a recent complete coolant drain, and refill, it did take a few hundred miles (couple of weeks) before I had to finally stop topping up the reservoir.

Just to echo others, about a year ago my coolant kept dropping down near the Min marker after long motorway drives. I eventually replaced the reservoir cap with a new genuine Volvo part, and I've never had the problem since.
