Phase 1/2 differences

Wormlike apols: this is probably really daft, in the "How do I know if mine is a S or a V?" league. But, what's all this about Phase 1 and 2 (or is it I and II)? I've done a search on <phase> and on <phase> with <difference> but did not manage to pick up anything relevant. I'm interested in when I became II, and quite what the major differences were, esp. recognition features. (My S40 is April 1998 so, dunno, probably I? Please don't tell me Hey, the only pre-owned model anybody sane would ever purchase, is a Phase II!)
