Default Winter / all season tires for XC60 T8

I’m considering getting tires for the winter. I live in Scotland and it’s chilly.
I am utterly confused about the options and practicalities for my 20 inch MY22 XC60 T8.

Any advice gratefully received! Also - are the factory supplied tires sufficient?

Thanks

Yes they are suitably rubbish in snow and ice / like any other summer tyre tbf.

Put your car reg in on black circles / Asda tyres and have a look if all-season tyres are available e.g. Michelin cross climates

Or if you’re regularly driving in the worst of it. Then have a look what winter tyres are available. If going on winters - If you have a local tyre fitter that you use. They may hold on to your summer tyres for you through the winter months.

Just fitted a set of Vrdestein Quatrac Pro All Season tyres on my V60 T6 AWD. They have the M+S with the snow flake and should perform well on snow as well as cold and wet conditions. They have a pattern specially good for rain which is why I went for them.

I had Michelin crossclimate on my previous car and they were also very good.
I live in Madrid now but when I lived in the UK (Bolton) I had a set of Winters instead of the All Seasons I have now. In Scotland, I would probably go for a set of Winters if I were you.

You can find good deals in ebay if you want a separate set of wheels and in the long run, the extra cost will be neglible as when you use the winters, the summer set is not in use and tyres will last much longer.

I had pirelli Pzero fitted when i got my V90cc and they were positively dangerous in the snow/ice i couldn't wait to change them I now have Verdstein Quadtrac Pro All Season which are excellent in the rain and dry Haven't had much snow here yet tho it was -11 at the car this morning bit i expect they will be fine

I'm from the north of Sweden and we can have "real winter" tires with metal spikes which is the only thing truly effective in ice conditions in my opinion. Now since these tires are not legal in most of Europe it would be expected the roads are properly salted if driving around on M&S and normal Winter tires and that temperatures are not that low in the place you live.

I currently live in Madrid and even if we go frequently skiing in the North, for the rare occasion there are "winter roads" in the mountains, I put on socks/chains. Driving around on all year on M&S tires compromises summer performance too much and still are not good in true winter conditions so I don't see much use for them.

If I lived in a place getting true winter roads every year, I would personally have summer and winter tires. Winter tires being tires that have rubber blends that is still is flexible in cold degrees and are rated for that. M&S tends to go rockhard in colder temperatures making them useless.

So in short, if your place don't get colder than -5 then maybe M&S are an option, but if it does, I would say you should have two sets.

I managed to find a reasonably priced set of 18s with Nexen winter tyres on them to fit on my 2020 R design pro.

A very different look going from 21s to 18s, but who cares, they are bought to do a job.

Well, we have had a fair bit of snow in North East Scotland over the past few days and all I can say is wow! Incredibly impressed. Weve been on some pretty hazardous roads that we would never have gone on…..but an illness meant we had to do a mercy mission to look after our granddaughter….the car was amazing. Seeing cars spin and struggle all around us, the superb xc60 on winters never remotely lost traction once, really sure footed, smooth, effortless.

Very impressed.

The only thing that was an issue was a distinct lack of screenwash following a recent service at Volvo Aberdeen, everything was totally frozen up. We found an Asda selling a super low temp screenwash concentrate and bought that. Solved the issue and has not frozen since.
