V70 d5 clutch, special tools?

Hi, I have a 2003 V70 D5 with a slipping clutch. I know the main dealer has a special tool to compress the covers diaphragm and another to set the self adjusting mechanism. These are fitted before the cover is installed.
My question is can the job be done without these tools or will the self adjustment be affected?

you need the tools to keep the auto adjust mechanism in the fully retrieved position whilst the cover is tightened , there is a special tool which fits inside to centralise the clutch plate too whilst you do this .A standard aligning tool won't fit of course. Don't forget the special grease for the input shaft splines or you could well suffer clutch drag soon after .Oh , and please it a genuine volvo clutch , it is not a job you want to do twice within a year!

Does anyone know of someone who can do this job near me? perhaps someone who does a bit of private work? I'm in Essex near southend.

I have a kit of these tools which I occasionally hire out.

They are homemade. I have used them, and a guy off here used them.


You loosely assemble the cluch on the FW - then need to compress the clutch ( as you would with your foot ) with the compressor, (in the kit) whilst IN, you can safely tighten the cover plate bolts.
While In this state. you need to retract/reset the self adjuster ring back to the start - this needs to be held in situ ( with a small Plier like tool in the kit ) Whilst held, you can release the pressure on the compressor. Then release the adjuster ring plier. Job done.

You need a strong flywheel lock (in the kit )

Plus a clutch alignment tool (in the kit )

I havent seen it in the garage for a good while but it was all in a box together. Maybe in garage loft.

Hi, does anyone know if you need to reset the self adjusting mechanism on the clutch pressure plate if fitting the old clutch ?
I have a 2004 V70 D5 and just about to refit my gearbox. I have checked the clutch and it is nearly new so will be refitting it.

if you use the tools when removing the clutch the springs keep the mechanism retracted ready for fitment again . But with no tool the adjustment ring will spring back to max so the clutch will not work properly if you refit it like that ..

Ok thanks for the advice, much appreciated. I did remove the clutch without using the tool and marked the position of the self adjust springs before removal. I'm ready to refit now and the springs are still in the same position as before I removed the clutch is this normal ?
