Default S40 diesel starting issue

Hi all,
I have just recently encountered problems starting my 2008 s40 2.0D

Ignition position 1 and 2 happen as normal, but when I turn to position 3 there is nothing. The engine does not turn over at all.
If I hold it in position 3 for anywhere between 5 to 10 seconds the cars starts.

As far as I know, the battery and heater plugs are fine.
Any ideas?

Michael

Is the key a loose fit? Although I haven't experienced it personally I've read that a loose fitting key can cause all kinds of starting problems.

Hi,
I don't think so. I can't feel any difference in the key since I bought it 3 years ago.
It must be something else.

Hi,
It would seem that your assumption was correct.

I sprayed some Servisol switch cleaner in to the ignition and worked it a few times.
A couple of days later I did the same, but with WD40.

The car now starts first time as usual.

I wouldn't have suspected the switch in a million years. Thanks.
