1.6D S40 black smoke/soot
Hello everyone,
Have a problem with my 2005 S40 1.6D, 83K on the clock, any help appreciated. Heavy black smoke from the exhaust, almost soot like on the ground after startup. Also upon acceleration there is heavy smoke and the engine stumbles a lot. Engine idles roughly too, but not on all occasions. The EGR valve has been replaced not too long ago, approx 3k miles. This problem has been occurring only recently. Any suggestions on what I could check myself before bringing it to a mechanic? Thanks a mil. |

Have found smoke to be coming from the brass coloured pipe. Any suggestions on where to go from here? Would this be something a DIY mechanic might sort out himself?
thanks |

Black smoke and soot can be fuel or air related. Does the car do a lot of short journeys? If you car has the Eolys fuel additive (which I believe it has) it may not be able to run the regeneration program fully and if this has happened many times the computer will have logged each and every event.
Have a read of this and this. Probably best to get it to the main dealer and have them carry out a dianostics test and stationary regeneration.

Thanks, I have had a mcehanic look at it briefly and he said that I do not have a dpf fitted at all. I also saw in another post that depending on the 8th character of the VIN, you can tell if there is a dpf, it adds up that mine has no dpf.
So what could possibly be causing this excessive smoke, and soot from the tailpipe and poor idling and acceleration? Could the CAT be blocked? Thanks |

My knowledge of this model/engine is limited but I had my friends 1.6D with similar symptoms to yours and we had the aforementioned diagnostics and regeneration carried out by the main dealer and the car returned to normal afterwards.
You mention the EGR valve was replaced not too long ago - was all the associated pipework cleaned out properly? Some carbon deposits may have dislodged...? Are you using the correct grade/spec engine oil? The turbo will suffer as a result of using the incorrect grade - there was a service bulletin released from Volvo in relation to this.

Brought it to a mechanic and as it turns out my car has no dpf! he mentioned that it had some egr fault codes. However my egr was replaced a few months ago by previous owner. i might take a look at the condition of the egr myself. is a diy job possible and what must i look for to determine it's condition? thanks
