Default Broken Clutch Cable??

Just driven my '03 Bifuel V70 into friend's driveway. Got back in, started engine put into gear, took foot off clutch and nothing happened - in any gear.
The clutch feels just the same as usual; sometimes there is a slight bit of noise but mostly just engine noise.

Is it a broken clutch cable (does the V70 have a cable?) or something else.

The car has done about 235,000 miles and I've just put it through it's MOT. It cost me £1,300 3 years ago and I've done about 45,000 in that time. I've used it probably 50 times pulling a fairly large trailer, occasionally quite heavily loaded.

I'd br VERY grateful for any advise as to the likely problem and whether this is likely to cost a lot to have repaired.

The clutch is hydraulic so no cable.
Flush the old fluid through (like bleeding brakes) and see if that helps before worrying about anything else.

Evening , your clutch is hydraulic & has a concentric release bearing fitted around the input shaft of the gearbox . You could try pulling the gaiter out of the gearbox where the clutch fluid pipe enters the gearbox & see if you can see the release bearing & is it extended , thereby holding the clutch diaphragm down making it act as if your foot was still on the clutch pedal . A quick try would be to open the bleed nipple & see if any fluid spurts out , try to watch the clutch move as the nipple is opened .

After that I would presume to remove the gearbox & inspect the clutch assy & flywheel .

Hope for the first & good luck

Thank you for the info. I will try that.

That is a very comprehensive answer. Thank you. Although I've worked on mower engines, Standard 8s and Beetles - i.e. simple engines - I've never done more than change the oil and plugs on this machine. Can you aim me towards some workshop manual diagrams on the internet that will help me locate the clutch fluid pipe and the bleed nipple.

I shall certainly hope for the first as I don't have the facilities to remove the gearbox and I fear that getting it done in a garage would be a greater cost than the value of the car!

Thanks again

You said the clutch pedal still feels the same that rules out hydraulic problems , I would say the clutch plate lining has broken up due to wear and tear . OR a drive shaft broken . Most likely the clutch ...

My pleasure , OK moving along , lying under front of car , locate starter motor . From the starter you will see a bulge in the gearbox casing that the nose of the starter fits into , slightly below & towards the nearside of the car is a rectangular black rubber groomit with a metal pipe going throught . That is your target peel back the grommit & you may be able to see the problem . I am lucky as a friend has a USB fibre optic scope that works with my laptop & can get inside engines , maybe one of your kids / grandkids / neighbours has something similar you can use to make viewing easier

Have a look at this post I did a while back. There are some interesting links on here that may help. http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=247265

Thanks again. That camera setup looks very useful.

Could be an interesting Bank Holiday weekend. I live right out in the sticks & nobody else around here, let alone one with a fibre optic camera! Looks as though it would be well worth buying - even if too late for this. Will have to cycle to where the car is with whatever I need. Difficult to fit axle stands on a bike! but hope I can wriggle underneath without that...

At least the sun is shining.

That, I fear, would be the end of the car as repair would cost more than car is worth - so pinning my hopes on dingoV70's suggestion.
