Default Handbrake issue

Can any clarify how the handbrake operates. Is it on the rear brake disks or does it have its own disk?

I went away on holiday for a week and left the handbrake on and when I came back it was difficult to get the handbrake to release. It did eventually release with a good bit of throttle but I have a rumbling noise since.

The handbrake uses a separate set of shoes inside the centre of the rear discs, the rear brakes do very little as the brake bias is to the front wheels, the handbrake shoes do even less as they are normally only used to hold the car still once it is stopped. There is a bit of a history of the handbrake shoes delaminating, the friction linings come off of the metal bit, but when you consider they are probably the originals from pre 2000 that's perhaps not so surprising. If the lining has come off it will be inside the drum fouling things up, the only surefire way I can think to check is to take it apart

As he said ^^^^^^^ Rear brakes need stripping to see what is going on. I would fit new shoes and anything else that looks dodgy and know the job is sorted for the future. It is also an opportunity to clean up/replace the rear pads and check the callipers/discs.

Agreed - you need to do all this, it's a fairly common issue on these. When you re-assemble, make sure you adjust them as per proper procedure, there's a "how to" in the articles section above.

many thanks all

My local mechanic mentioned something about de-laminating. I better get it looked at then. I was hoping it would go away with use but it doesn't seem to be happening.

Deffo have a check, this was my nearside rear disc after leaving the handbrake on for a fortnite while we were on holiday. Jumped in, went to pull off and there was a bang as the handbrake came unstuck, thing is the lever then did nothing, felt like a cable had snapped. Drove to work and heard nothing untoward, it was only when I checked the car in the carpark that I noticed that!!!

The handbrake shoe delaminated, snapped in half and rode up on top of the backing now effectively a hell of a lot thicker than before, caused a massive pressure spike in a localised area and burst the disc. Wheel still span, no noise (other than the bang when it let go), new rear brakes complete sorted it.
