Default What would you do, new cv joint?

Hi all,

After a few opinions on what I should do. My front drivers side abs ring is corroded and making the abs cut in when I brake. I can't decide whether to attempt to change the ring myself, which may well be stuck firmly in place with rust, or to pay £180 for the local garage to change the cv joint (think that's beyond my skills) which would obviously include a new ring. We drove the car through winter with a split cv boot, I noticed it when doing something else and then completely forgot about it until about 6 months later! The boot has been replaced now but might be lots of grime and salt made it's way in to the joint.

Obviously I don't want to spend the £180 when it's £1.99 for a new ring but if you were me would you change the cv joint? Car is my wife's daily drive and going to be using it to tow the caravan during the year which is way I'm leaning towards paying for the new cv joint.

What are your thoughts? What would you do?

Thanks,

Mike

Generally speaking I'm firmly in the camp of "If it ain't broke don't fix it"however given it's a daily driver and the towing use you intend for it I think in this instance I'd go with cv replacement.

If you had not had the issue with the split boot, I would say change ring only. However, as the boot has been a problem with possible unknown damage done to the joint I would fit a new joint. There is going to be a fair amount of stripping to fit the ring, so you may as well do the job properly.

Thanks guys. I don't want to spend the money replacing the joint but I'm thinking that might be the sensible option. At least it will be done then and should last a while.

I wouldn't worry about the abs ring being stuck. A sharp blow with a hammer and chisel will split it in two and will fall off.
