Well it's not exactly a huge area, and that's what the roller is for, I guess.

Well guys got a complete head inc cams arriving tomorrow from lea valley in london. cost £350 all in. think price a bit steep really but they insist it been thoroughly checked and is in perfect order. fitting myself, done loads of them in past, not 850 though so any tips out there will be welcome.
Still waiting for my car to come back from volvo specialists, recovery company didn't collect today as agreed, incompetent idiots they seem, rang and spoke to someone with 1 brain cell or so he sounded ,didn't have a clue and said ring back tomorrow,10 min later his boss rings me and said been up to neck in it today and will collect for certain in morning, then says do you want us to fit head for you. Not bloody likely just bring her home in one piece with no damage mate.

Make sure you use the tools to hold the top cam cover down via spark plug holes. See Haynes.
If you don't you will strip the threads on the small bolts and have to buy a new head.

Cheers Chris, just been reading up on it in Haynes, think I will ring this volvo specialist first thing in morning for a quote on doing it for me, a bit more to it than the old in-line engine with just a head and shimmed tappets isn't there, I will save £50 quid on recovering the car from there to start with.

liquid gaskets are becoming increasingly popular and do have to be applied by roller - not the head gasket though! Do not add any liquids etc when fitting it - it is MLS (multi layeed steel) and needs to go on dry and clean.
I think you find liquid gaskets on the bedplate/block and sump/bedplate joints - and rocker cover ?

Make sure your head bolts are very clean as the threads in the block can be fragile

And make sure that you fit new head stretch bolts also.

When I bought mine, some previous owner/mechanic had had the head off and then torqued it back with the old stretch bolts (which had obviously stretched and got longer). The result was bolts which hit the bottom of the threaded cavity in the block and put a stress on the block. 5 Months after I had bought the car, a 4 inch crack appeared in the block and I had to shell out £1700 on a secondhand engine, clutch, belts, fluids etc...

Someone elses mistake proved very pricey for me!

OUCH !

I never realised they were that close to bottoming out ... thanks for the warning. These threads are generally rolled in production which gives them a larger core diameter than cut threads. If the bolts are close to bottom limit there can be very little thread engagement diameter left and ... Stripppppp .. not so expensice as your problem but a real pain in the a$$ never the less ...

Not taking a chance guys, car still at specialists,I'm getting him to fit it all. I supply Head with valves, tappets, cams. He supplying all rest inc new timing belt, that sealing stuff, new oil, filter etc. And his superior knowledge and his fault if go wrong. Ha Ha. Charging me £500. Saved £50 on transporting car back home anyway. Is this cheaper than main dealer, anyone know ?
Will use him in future if I know he cheaper than main dealer, definitely knows what he's talking about with Volvo's anyway.
I Estimate this will have cost me £990 all inc.

Well I think that proves the value of the Club - much useful info even for those lucky enough not to have a head go south.

Please let us know the final result of all the angst and good luck with your car in the future.

I have to say though, the 2 litre is underpowered - if you can get hold of a larger-engined car (don't try a DIY transplant, please) do so.
