Default Clutch release bearing...

V70 D5 Manual 2014 - 40k miles.

When I depress the clutch pedal of my V70 I can hear what I believe to be the clutch release bearing making a "Hissing" or "tambourine rattle" noise. Its not much more than that. No banging noise, no vibration through the pedal, no shifting issues, no difference in the feel (I think - small variations can sneak up on you un-noticed)

1) At 40K ( VERY few urban miles ) is this type of wear reasonable? My 3 previous V70's ( all P2) have all gone to 100K+ without any clutch issues at all, infact my 2002 V70 T5 got to 240K on original clutch.

2) Do I have to do anything with the clutch at this time? ( I think I know the answer to this - but I'm hoping someone might say all these P3's have noisy thrust bearings - don't worry.

Cheers

Bob

They have been known to fail early, I think clan on here who is a Volvo mechanic has seen a few. Of course it's a box out job to change so a new plate at least is on the cards given the work to change it.

My old P1 v70 is on 225,000 miles on original clutch and release bearing.

Thanks Paul. It annoys me that this item has failed so early in its life. I have deliberately not used the car for short trips - due to perceived DPF issues on short journeys. In fact 80% of its travels have been to daughter, and inlaws both 3hrs on motorways/dual carriage ways.

Unlike the early failure issue with the rear trailing arm bushes ( another premature fail item) it appears not many members on here have suffered early thrust bearing failure - or possibly they have not yet seen this thread

Thanks again for your comment.

Cheers
Bob

PS.. I'm going to add DMF to the parts required list....

I have thought that if transmissions on cars had from the outset been automatic, how would a car salesman try to sell you the special optional extra - a manual gearbox:

"So this great feature means that instead of just two boring pedals, go and stop, you have an extra bonus pedal. And instead of a gear selector which you engage once and leave it where it is, you have one with at least 6 positions which are not always obvious where they are but offer you the chance of surprises, and in years to come there may be even more slots to choose from.

The new joy of this system is that every time you think the engine is not working efficiently, you push the extra pedal and move the lever into a different position and then let go of the pedal in a controlled manner so as not to harm the engine or the transmission. There is no limit to the number of times that you can do this on even a short journey, so this is a feature which is not just for its looks but is of use all the time. So not only can you control the car almost as well as the old fashioned computer operated seamless transmission system with which we are all accustomed but you get the chance to tap dance while you are sitting in the driving seat. Which is great for exercise if you drive a lot in traffic.

I cannot speak highly enough about this wonderful new transmission system and its potential for sporting activities as there are rumours that the extra pedal may be incorporated into F1 racing cars, but that hasn't happened yet.

Can I interest you in adding this hi tech feature to your new car?"

The nearest thing I can equate manual transmission to is a barbed wire flail for self flagellating while driving. Haven't been tempted to buy one of those either for about 30 years!

Tatsfield, far be it for me to disparage your faith in wonderful automation. While I have driven auto transmition vehicles I have never enjoyed the experiance and an auto off road doesnot have the engine brakeing of a manual so you are reliant upon your brakes where you realy need rolling wheels not sledge runners.

Obviously volvo think as you, hence no manual option on the v90. That's fine it's their car, and will remain so, for I shall never buy one.
To get my 3rd peddle I drove a 12 hour round trip to view and buy and repeated it the next weekend to pick it up. That's 24 hours driving for the pleasure, and for me it is a pleasure of the 3rd peddle.
