Xc90 - engine service required
Hi there - I have a 53' Plate XC90 D5 SE Automatic. Recently,it has started to play up!!!.It will be going along and all of a sudden the acceleration just dies, only for seconds/minutes and then it seems to clear itself, or you cannot go any faster than say 30mph for a few minutes. It can do it any time, in the 'fast' lane, when overtaking etc., and more often than not the 'Engine Service Required' will illuminate.
The first Volvo dealer that I took it to,said it was a leaking injector, replaced this, charged me a fortune and it never cured it. It has now spent some time at a Volvo specialist, they are scratching their heads and have tried a replacement air mass meter,to no avail. Nothing concrete is coming up on the diagnostic equipment and they are now suggesting a software upgrade (although I thought that the Volvo main agent had done this-but evidently not!......). I have heard EGR valves mentioned, intercoolers etc.etc. but everyone seems to be guessing and I am no mechanic! I have now spent over £800 and nobody seems to know?........is the software upgrade another waste of money?. There is a similar thread from 2007, but no replies. PLEASE HELP! as it is too dangerous to drive. The car has done just over 80k with a full Volvo history. Many thanks |

have you tried changing the fuel filter? That should be the first thing to do even it it was changed at the correct interval , dirty fuel can soon clog it .. NO software version will cause or cure this kind of problem ...
The fault codes will be a clue in which direction to go , what were they?

I had exactly the same problem with my 53 reg XC90 and the main dealer didn't have a clue even though this seems to be a fairly regular fault with the Volvo range. A local garage solved the problem albeit by accident. He undid all of the vacuum pipes leading to the turbo and did them back up tight - the problem went away.
