LPG price is not realy linked to petrol but heating fuel. There is actualy a shortage a LPG due to the early cold weather. The price of LPG does normaly go up a couple of pence in winter then drop down again in spring. The road duty on LPG is set to go 1p per litre more than petrol each year. That will take a long time to close the price gap.
Don't foget that Petrol will be going up 4p in the new year btween duty and vat. Looking at the LPG / Petrol prices the gap is still there. LPG 63p - 75p Petrol 123p 133p (derv about 2-3p more). That is around 60 pence per ltr. When I first started using LPG the gap was only around 40 pence! The truth of it all is that the costs of energy are going up and up. How much are you payaing for your electric now compared to 10 years ago? Do you remeber the fuel blockade because petrol hit £1 a litre and now we are paying a quater more again without a fight! I must admit can only see doing new conversions for about the next 5 years before it becomes a case that my LPG work will only be repairs to existing systems but I could be wrong. Maybe CNG will become readily available at a sensible price? I supose the question is are you going to pay £1.30+ per ltr of fuel or do you do enough miles to make a LPG conversion viable? |

Thanks for all the replys, I hadn't realised that lpg generally went up in price in winter, though diesel isn't exactly cheap at the minute anyway.
If possible I would try and find a car that is already converted to save on more of the costs, so I would only be comparing running costs between the two. The diesel I was considering is an Alfa 156 sportwagen with the 2.4 JTD engine. I've had one before so I know what they are like and I can get a relatively low mileage 2 owner car at the minute. But I've also seen a T5 with lpg conversion fitted, slightly higher mileage and slightly older but still only 130k. My old 850 T5 had over 200k on it and still managed 42mpg on the motorway running on petrol! If I could average around 25mpg on lpg I would be happy. Is that a realistic figure? |

Best miles to a tank on my T5 was 240 miles (45 L) tank
Worst 150 miles, now with the cold weather and daily price rises £20 only took me 110 miles !

Is that 45L of LPG or a 45L tank and you can fill to 80% of that?
Guessing at around 75ppl for the £20 fill that works out at 19mpg! For that same £20 a diesel getting 45mpg would do around 158 miles |

here's some data from my road trip app.
My old T reg 2.5T V70 that was converted to LPG. Cost me £1200 for the lastest OMVL last year Just some of the LPG data for this year. for the year it covered 12,462 miles, average mpg for that was 21.36mpg and averaged 12.7p per mile here's some data when it was on Petrol. Currently got a D5 now and only had it a month so during this chilly winter we've had, the data i've got so far says i'm averaging 34.53mpg at the moment i'll let you work out pence per mile. put i think when i worked it out, LPG worked out even better pence per mile then diesel
