I went from a volvo 740 2.3 carbed petrol to a brand new 2007 toyota corolla 1.4 D4D.
The volvo 740 never passed a petrol station Always drank like a binge drinker. I would quess around 20mpg. The corolla did 50 mpg very easily and was nippy and certainly never blew out any smoke We had it for 2.5 years and was very cheap to run and service. The only bad aspect on a new car is depriciation. A new car has to be a 10 year plan. I would be quite happy with a diesel I disliked the car as it was uncomfortable on long journeys and used to drip water on the seats as you opened the door. If I was living in the UK it would be petrol and run it on cheap LPG LPG is very expensive here and there are very few retailers and so the conversion wouldn't be worthwhile. James |

I came across an interesting comparison... driving a diesel is like drinking alcohol-free beer. It seems Ok at the time, but as soon as you revert to the 'real thing', by gawd, you realise what you've been missing out on.
I've never tried it with the beer, but I drove the diesel S60 for 4 years and, with hindsight, what a waste of 4 years motoring. |

Guys I would like to add this just as way of indicating my thinking on this subject. My understanding is that in the next two years Volvo will stop producing five cylinder engines and only produce four cylinder engines the cost of the average diesel engine including development will be nearer to 7 grand largely based on having to meet ever tightening emissions the cost of a petrol engine will be 3500 with fuel economy being close to 55 mpg this cost will ultimately make the cost of buying diesel slot dearer than currently add that to more expensive servicing costs and when components break( and it will happen as the tolerances get tighter and tighter for these emissions) it will show more ie the cost of a petrol injector is around £65-100 the cost of a diesel £250-300 a fuel pump petrol 250-300 diesel £1100-1500. I understand why diesel is popular but unless you do more than 18k a year it's not making enough sense right now...at least it does not for me?! Only my opinion mind!

I certainly don't plan to buy another diesel, I have owned 2. I think you were right to buy the petrol XC70. My experience of a D5 awd is that it rarely manages to achieve 40mpg and it is never driven hard.
IMO the term 'dirty Diesel' is still accurate and the reliability just isn't there to compensate for all the issues.

When i was looking to purchase an S60 less than 12 months ago, i considered 2 models; The D5 Diesel, or the R Petrol.
Looking at a number of each around the age of '53, i had a choice of £5k for an R model, or £2.5k for a D5. Having now driven 13k miles, with an average of 500 miles per tank of fuel, i'm confident that the D5 was by far the more economical choice for me. |

I have driven many company cars in my time both petrol and diesel.
The conclusion I have come to irrespective of fuel prices is that diesels are fine if somebody else is maintaining them and paying the running costs My own money, however, goes on fast petrol cars P.S. Don`t tell the masses, let them all use diesels to keep the price of our fuel down

well...... ive been in a renault laguna 1.9DCI for the past 2 years, averaging 50mpg... pennies to maintain & tax, great family car cant fault it.
but...... then bought the S60 T5 & i can safely say the extra cost of fuel is the LAST thing im thinking of while piloting this beast!! i wont be heading back to DERV for a long time....

It's a mindset thing with me I guess...and being old enough to remember the old "agricultural" diesels....
BUT..I just can't WANT a diesel.(I'm a PETROLhead.LOL)..fortunately I don't need to think too much about economy as I do a lot fewer miles these days but even so I've never fully bought into the diesel "myth" in respect of economy etc. More to buy...more to maintain..and expensive fuel....I know fans will say those things are balanced out, but I reckon (as with LPG) you gotta keep the car a while to see any benefit. (or as Rik says..have someone else paying the costs) I guess it's a bit like the Auto v. manual argument...the "purists" will always champion the manual transmission...but I don't WANT one.! Neil

Buy a petrol one, simple as. We have had an xc70 lpt (200bhp) and now have an xc70d5 (168). The petrol was so much nicer to drive.
