Dave, thanks for that. I don't know if the swirl valve arm has been eliminated but it sounds like it might be a solution. It goes in next week for a routine service so can ask them to check while it there.

its dead easy to check, just lift the engine cover and its right in front of you , to the left of center

Thanks for the link. Had a look and don't have one..... turns out my XC90 was one of the last Euro 3 engines, March 2006.

Shame, thought the problem could have been resolved..... back to the drawing board!

That sounds like it may be a collapsing intercooler hose, have read numerous threads of the hoses going soft over time, then collapsing under high load and causing the limp mode.
