They go on about how dirty diesels are, what about the amount if fuel used mining and moving raw materials around the world on boats to make the batteries. Batteries don't last for ever either.

Is it a brand new car you are after?
Why not go and ask for a good long test drive, if it has to be Volvo then the new V90 or newer V60 look rather nice. There are plenty of other quality cars to try though. If I could get my head around buying a new car then I would love to have a go in a V90 T8. The interior looks outstanding!

The only problem is of you have an accident and need front end or body components , they will write it off . But second hand parts are easily available to get it repaired locally . You could go and get yourself a V60 perhaps if you have the money , that should be ok for 10 years or so !

I agree with Clan, why change when you have a car that does everything you ask of it and in your words-'best looking cars i've seen'which for an estate i would agree with you,and in my opinion is a nicer shape than the P3,-[sorry P3 owners],so what about getting the best spec P2 Volvo built before Fords influence, maybe a facelift D5 with less miles than yours,i don't think diesels will be a problem for the immediate future, unless you plan to visit London centre, but as the euro 4 engine, 185 bhp is more environmentally friendly, and a reasonable cost on road tax,i think is a good option.Like you Guy,i too think these are great cars and certainly plan to keep mine for the next 10 years,by hook or crook.

Just do what a lot of people do on this forum......keep it, and run it as an everyday driver. My 31 year old 740GL has just passed its MOT on Friday and got its yearly service at the same time without any problems or advisories.....it ticks all my boxes and does what it says on the tin!

Yes, the old school, in 20 years from now a manual 325i in good condition will be worth gold. Wait until nostalgia kicks in. As for the gearbox shifter, we still get the paddle shifters, I personally like that. I think many, as we grow old, prefer to have less pedals for some reason Back to the topic, to me the 2001-2009 Volvo were the last quality Volvos. It was a time when the company had such a management team that decided to put quality in front of everything. The team of those years went on spending more money on many parts, than most competitors. Alas, such attitude is very rare in the competing market. It happens once in a while, but it doesn't last when the management changes company or simply when the board of directors decide the customer will buy anyway even with cheaper parts. I don't think the 2010+ Volvos are much better in quality than the competition. Don't think either many 2010+ Volvos will do high mileages (300000+ miles) like so many P2 models did. Newer P3 models have cheaper components and combined with the well known culture of the Volvo company of denial and refusal to take responsibility for engineering defects out of the warranty period, I would be afraid to own a hybrid or all electric Volvo past the 100000 miles mark.

I can give you a couple of engineering defects were the manufacturer refused to take responsibility. I think this is a trend across all companies. It's all about money and nothing else.

As mentioned above, "If it aint broke dont fix it" do you need to change it, you could end up spending a load of money and not feel that you have gained anything.
I have sort just gone the other way. Having recently had a brand new Skoda Superb I am now the proud owner of a 5 year old V70. There are very few things that I miss, certainly not enough to justify spending the extra money which is now sat in my bank rather than depreciating in a car.

Picking up on the comment about manual boxes becoming rarer. this is another step towards autonomous driving cars. We have had automatic wipers, lights, lane awareness, sign awareness, city braking etc. These are all gizmos that the driverless car needs. They won't need a manual box.

Personally I wouldn't like to buy a new car right now. We're in a state of flux - diesel is on the way out, hybrids are kind of in but not really the solution, petrol has downsized and we're waiting for the development in battery technology and infrastructure that will make pure electric cars properly viable. Personally I'm very excited about future electric motoring, but I want mine to fly too.
If your V70 doesn't need anything major doing to it and you like it, I'd suggest keeping it going until something too expensive to justify needs doing, and then considering your options. My 240 is still going!
