And the winner is?
It seems the winner of the World Car Of The Year 2018 is the Volvo XC 60.This apparently gives Volvo a double whammy as they have the European Car Of The Year 2018 award for the "40" cars.Congratulations and well done Volvo

Never understood how car of the year could be awarded in March, were it December it may have meaning, as it is it all seems a meaningless ego massage to me.
I suppose congratulations are due but without knowing the criteria the judging was carried out on its just another blurb. I baught my Volvo because I liked and wanted it, not because my model had or hadnot won car of the year. Paul. |

Like yourself I've never figured out how a "car of the year"can be chosen so early on,perhaps it has to do with release dates/model years? I believe many parameters are used in judging, style, performance ride/handling etc. European car of the year started way back in the early '60s-first winner was iirc Rover 2000 P6.Most COTY winners have gone on to be flops! But then it's all judged by motoring journalists.

I tend to disagree with all these type awards as the judging criteria is far removed from my daily life.
Top speed, handling around a race track, gadgets etc are all irrelevant. How about comfort, load space, reliability (ok, hard to judge if the model is new), pot-hole-ability, servicing costs, purchase price, depreciation (again hard to judge but the brand should be an indicator), ie all the things that we have to deal with in the increasingly hostile road network we pay billions for and yet get a very poor return. I'd be quite interested in a TV car show that actually reviewed cars that were available to joe public and were a bit more comparative to the real world.
