Default Consequences of oil level too high

Hi all,

I've owned my XC90 2 weeks, the garage I bought it from did a service before I picked it up. They have filled the oil to the max level and I've got the engine system service required message with my fault code reader showing a fault for oil level. I know I need to drain some oil out to get it down to around 3/4 between min and max but we are supposed to be going away tomorrow and I'm not going to get the chance. Will it be ok to wait a week and another 300-400 miles before I drain it? What are the consequences of driving it with the oil level too high?

If we have to we will delay our trip by a day and Ill drain some out Saturday morning but I would prefer to carry on using the car and do it next weekend if it won't cause any problems.

Thanks,

Mike

I've arranged to borrow one of the oil suction things that let's you suck oil out from the dipstick tube tomorrow. So I'll have a go with that tomorrow evening and we will wait until Saturday to go away. I'll be constantly worrying about it otherwise

If the suction technique does not work you should be OK to drive as long as level is not over the max; the reason I believe Volvo have set the recommended level at 2/3 is to allow for the sump to take unburned fuel in the even to of a regeneration failing and dumping it; I have had my 2013 200BHP for nearly 2 years now and the oil level has remained the same between services which makes me think for a short while you are fine.

Thanks XJSDriver. It's my wife's daily drive and she doesn't really do a lot of miles so I hope we aren't going to have a lot of problems with the dpf regeneration. She does the occasional longer run down to her parents but even that's only a 25 minute drive with 15 out of the 25 minutes being on the motorway. The dpf and the fuel getting in to the oil was my biggest reservation about buying the car.

Have a look at the posts about having over 2/3 oil in the engine. then drain it. It causes all sorts of problems and blocked my cat up. Had to drain oil and then give it some severe Italian tune up to get the fuel consumption back up.
Just saying!

I changed the oil in mine when I bought and tipped to the max mark. I drove like that for 6,000 miles and then changed (2/3rds if the way).

My 90 had no problems and I have never had levels ride.

That said, whilst I do 2 or 3 short trips at the weekend my weekday commute is always 30 miles plus each way.
