Default XC90 v Audi Q7...my impression

I drove my mates Q7 a couple of days ago and as a driving experience, it wipes the floor with the XC90 but I still won't buy it even if I had a million pounds.
For starters, his is only managing 22.4mpg.Don't get me wrong,I am no member of the green party but the Q7 is almost obscene.Secondly he tells that his 7yr old daughter complains that her head hits the roof when goes over a sleeping policeman whilst in the 3rd row seat.
Thirdly the car is just too big.It cannot fit in a standard car park slot and I am sure the driver of a J reg punto will scratch it just for the fun of it.
I will say though, that its(Q7) handling was almost impeccable(esp on the 20inch rims)
The engine is a lot smoother and the acceleration at intersections inspires confidence.I think that the Q7 will lose value precipitiously in the next few years. The new X5 appears very good except it looks a bit odd and a little too macho.I look forward to test driving it though.

Had a go in a Q7 myself yesterday, have to say my XC90 felt old and dated when I got back in it.

The front end styling of the Q7 looks fantastic/menacing but, the rear end could be mistaken for a Hyundai or that new Subaru.

Which Q7 was it - the 3.6 or 4.2? I was offered a tempting deal on a 3.6 before I plumped for the XC90, but I had already spent some time in a friend's fully loaded 4.2, so it felt a bit pauper spec. I haven't driven one though. Some random observations:

They do feel much bigger inside than the XC90 but headroom in the rear (middle and 3rd row) is poorer, as you say. They are indeed a big car - feel very high quality but I don't feel that my XC90 is old fashioned in comparison. The bhp/ton on the 3.6 is almost identical to the 3.2 XC90 since it is a lot heavier. The seats in the Q7 are the most comfortable I have ever sat in. I agree that it will depreciate faster than an XC90 in the UK. The XC90 is better packaged and thought out, and makes much more sense to own I think.

I have had a diesel Q7 S-line on loan from Audi for 2 days as was considering replacing my Landcruiser Amazon with one. It is without question superbly built, very luxurious, very high-tech, handles really well with adjustable damper/ride height settings, but the boot is really quite small, the bonnet is impressive but stupidly long (prefer more cabin space), fuel consumption average 23.5mpg and the bit that ruled it out for me was it's sheer size. It is massive - just enormous. Even after the Amazon, if felt huge and looking at the dimensions, it longer and wider. Parking it in any normal space with a car either side is just a joke. If you actually manage to get it into the space you can't actually open the doors. I can't help but think the Q7 will really get other drivers backs up too. Real nice car all the same.
