Default comparison site

if you go to one of the many insurance comparison sites, you will get an idea of who would meet your requirements.

Yes - but as soon as you tell them you have 4 convictions and 3 accidents in 2004 and another SP50 in 2007 they seem to loose the ability to 'quote you happy' lol - it's more whether I meet their requirements than the other way round!

I am sure there are some out there but almost all of the mainstream search comparison websites do not seem to want to take drivers with an 'unusual' history.

Thanks for you help

AC10 = Failing to stop after an accident.
AC20 = Failing to give particulars or to report an accident.
MS10 = Leaving a vehicle in a dangerous position.
IN10 = Using a vehicle uninsured against third party risks.
SP50 = Exceeding speed limit on a motorway.

Plus three accidents in 2004.

And you wonder why your premiums are so high?

If you drive a "normal" car, have little or no accident history or have no more "history" than 3 points on your licence, then the on-line insurance companies will love you. They can easily work out the risk you present to them as a client and will charge you accordingly.

If you have an unusual car (highly modded, kit car, rare classic, supercar etc) or have the kind of history you have, they're just not geared up to calculate / take on the amount of risk you present. That's when you need a specialist insurer. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of these nowadays so you have to hunt around.

Ironically, Norwich Union are one of the main underwriters for these specialist insurers. However, Norwich Union Direct (who are the public facing bit) seem not to have anything to do with them ...........

car insurance always amazes me. You wait until you are 21 for it to go down, it never does. You then wait until you are 25 for it to drop in price. It never does.

You build up no claims but this appears to have no effect.

For example. I have gone from a modified 740 with over 100% increase in power as well as body kit etc etc to a standard c70 with less power and yet the insurance has gone up over £100.

It also seems to be the case that each renewal I get, it also goes up - not down. How this works out, I have no idea.

ok /rant.

Try Privilege mate. They only ask for 3 years and were the cheapest (online) by far.

That's because it's a renewal When you first sign up with an insurance company they give you a nice new customer discount. So, simple solution (and what I and many other folks do) is just end the policy each year, and restart a new one with the same company, thereby getting the new customer discount all over again. I've never had them refuse to do it yet.

I've found that getting a quote online before renewal and then challenging the renewal price if it's higher than the quote, works in most cases and the insurer will reduce the renewal premium.
